I still have to confirm this, however I heard that a company around here charges $12.00 / inch with little to no clean-up. That's about 10.5" of stump to grind in an hour to match your $125.

Can ya dig it?

Then you haven't lost anything, just value. And yes I do understand that you may have realized a better return on your money if you had invested it in a machine rather than the market. Remember though, that you have to consider the value of your labor invested in order for that machine to generate a return. Sounds like you are in good hands w/ your mother's background. Many investors are not savvy enough to ride it out. :)

$12 an inch? Anybody that would pay that kind of money for stump grinding, probably deserves to.

Round here in central Ct they like 2.00 an inch, no clean up. I've seen a guy eyeball them though.

Wow, I must be going to hell. I charge 145.00 an hour, one hour minimum, though I have been known to go easy on some folks if its little or on the way to another job. lets see deisel is 2.68 a gallon, I put around 150-200 miles a day on the truck when grinding, I have to do the bid, sharpen the teeth service te machine etc. 145.00 sounds a litle fookin cheap now that I think about it. :umpkin:

charging by the inch

There has got to be a uniform way to measure a stump by width and height then by how much you want to charge by or per square inch, most people charge by just width times the amount per inch which works out sometimes but not all the time.
We can come up with a width x height figure easy but what about that 3rd figure which would be the amount per square inch based on $100.00 or $125.00 per hour grinding time. Anybody got an idea??

Very good points made treeco, but this way to figure would only be a standard base of measurement and a person could add to or take from as needed for his working conditions. A standard we could all refer to when talking about stump removal and such.

Is that all you are worth?

First of all let me just say I do not know everything but think about this:

The last time you called a plumber, electrician, appliance repair, Hvac, alarm repair company.

What do you think the min. Charge is? $47.50, 67.50, 87.50

I own an alarm company.I get $67.50 to show up (good paying clients)
$87.50 (bad pay) plus $67.50 hour plus parts.

How could you make money for $50 ???

When your competitors do not charge the proper amount: the term is called

CORRUPTING THE MARKET PLACE -

Don't forget(THE OTHER SERVICE GUYS) they do not even have a 40K+ machine!

Are you going to work for 3-4 hours (includes drive & office time)
for $50???

Don't forget the equipment payment. Oh yeah the truck payment and gas
(ouch) and Insurance.

Most people are thinking of the stump as a "maybe." We generally don't even give quotes 'cause folks just aint interested.

But when we do we quote $2 per inch diameter of the hole we end up with. and that does not include hauling grindings away.

If we have several stumps on one site or a regular customer we bid at $120 per hour, still no hauling of grindings.

We're thinking of going to a square inch bidding model but not yet....too much else going on.

We schedule our stumps in batch...about once every month to 6 weeks and rent a rayco JR. Meets the needs and breaks up the routine. Kinda gives me something to look forward to.

We do stumps basically to ensure we get the other work.
