Hello All,

I have a Sugar Maple that I will be picking up from a tree farm here next week. They are keeping it for a week after digging it out and packing the root ball in burlap to make sure it doesnt go into shock, I guess

Anyway my question is how from the septic tank is a safe distance with a sugar maple? From what Ive seen online they have shallow roots, but the lady at tree place said there major root is one that goes straight down(cant remember the term) and that 8-10 feet from the septic tank is fine because it doesnt have "those" type of roots.

Ideally about 15 feet away is where I want to put it, however obviously if this isnt a safe distance, I wont put it there.

Thanks a ton,

Pat

I ( meaning me) would space it a little futher out. But there are many trees that grow right up against houses, like a few of mine, and the basement walls are just fine.
Its going to be a big tree so make sure you have it in enough growing room.

By a little further are you thinking 15 feet or like 30 feet away from the septic? The tree has nothing around it in any direction by probably 60 feet. There used to be 2 ugly Chinese elms in the back yard but I had them both cut out because they were leaning, and nasty as could be.

Sugar maples do surface root a lot and they do get big. I would probaly stay as far away fro the septic tank as possible, if you ever have a problem with the tank or line and it has to be dug up the tree would be affected. The surface roots from the tree will extent out to the dripline and beyond of the tree at maturity so think about this when placing it. Here is a link for proper planting.

In addition to the tank you should make sure you know where the field is this will be damaged a lot quicker from roots than the tank will.
