So our local hack hero went and got his C.A., This should make me feel good as maybe he is trying to do things right, NOT, he only did it so he can advertise it. No way this guy will do things right, makes me mad because this just muddies the water. Absolutely horrible work, lots of complaints and the city's hate him, but he has his C.A.
The ISA needs a watch dog, they damn sure don't want this guy on the list. How do I know all this, he lives on my street! Used to work for me till I told him he needed to find something else to do, he started his own!
Now the C.A. doesn't have the ring it used too, if guys like this have it. They should give it away.

You are right....but as long as he has it and you don't then you need to deal....maybe if you became board certified you would be at a higher level.

Well, if he is as bad as you say...report him

Are you certified? Maybe a little jealous???? (just asking)

It is not that hard and it seems anyone who nows there stuff would not have a problem getting there C.A. credentials.

I.S.A did come out with a "code of ethics" all CA`s had to sign! If his work is that terrible turn him in!!!

the way I read it is they are starting to take notice of whats going on & if his work is that bad........then he should be suspended untill his work ethic changes!

I like the code of ethics.....its a selling point to customers who want work done right!!!

LXT.............

ISA C.A. is a crock anymore. Anyone can sit down and read a couple little books and a study guide, go take it and pass. A certification should always be hands on. There are alot of school book arborist around here that NEVER leave the ground nor know how to. It's hilarious how they try to act like they are somebody that doesn't have a clue. The regulations should be if you can't climb you shouldn't be able to hold a certification.

Disagree.

I've worked with a CA who got his right hand mangled as a young boy.

Still persued a career in arboriculture due to a great love of trees, even knowing he'd never be able to climb productively.

Turned his interest in trees to the academic side, the man knows more about trees than most.

Take HIS CA away, and I'd say mine is diminished.

The ISA Tree Worker/Climber Specialist is the add on cert that differentiates the two of us, and he'd be the first to acknowledge that.

Just an aside about this man, he's had me climb the trees on his own property, and I (we) arranged a simple belay system to get him up into one of them. 45-50 feet of the ground, with another climber already up to help him, you'd have thought we wrote him a passport to heaven. For him be in the crown of a tree for the first time, well, you had to be there...

Just goes to show you can be book smart but can't cut worth anything. Reminds me of this "those that can, do and those that can't, teach" in the end it will only hurt the industry. Now if the ISA had a practical type of test! That would keep more than a few away. I am not certified but I can do the work and all of my customers have been happy.

The ISA does of course have a practical test.

I am sick and tired of tree guys jamming the ISA without even checking what the ISA does or does not do.

I understand where the OP is coming from but I do have one question. If, for some reason, it was impossible to use your certification for advertising, would anyone get it?

Yes.

The test itself (pass or fail) put me in a room with 30 - 40 other aspiring arborists, and the conversation and face to face back and forth was more than worth the cost of the test.

The proctors of the test were longstanding members, some of whom I knew and many accomplished arborists who I got to meet for the first time.

Well worth it, even if I had failed, well worth it if I could not advertise.

Advertising should not really be considered anyway. Few of my customers even know what "arborist" means. Honest. I have to explain it to them all the time when they see it on my business card.

For me, that little certificate is most valuable when one of my guys starts arguing with me about how to do something in a tree. I used to have several guys that always thought they knew more than me, and always wanted to argue. Getting a certificate seems to have put that problem to rest.

Not that it makes any difference now. I got no treework to argue about with anybody. The argumentative types have moved on as well.

So you live in the boonies where no-one cares! What does that have to do with a cert?
Jeff
with all do repect- of course.
