I don't know.
I am sure it has been discussed, but I am asking again.

I am looking at buying a used Super Split. The guy said it has a new Honda engine, new rack & pinion gear, new bearings & belts. He "upgraded" the table to make it more sturdy, and made the pusher part of the rack bigger (4"x4") He is going to send me pictures today so I can at least get an idea what it looks like. It is 3.5 hours away, and he will deliver it because he has to pick up a piece of equipment and go past here anyway.

Anyway....I have a very small stove & house and I burn through around 4-5 cords a year. I usually light the stove twice a day, so I go through a TON of kindling. Does anyone have an opinion on making small kindling with a SS? Most of my wood is 10"-12" long. I have this seasons wood already split & very dry, but I would like to make a seasons worth of kindling now so I don't have to deal with it once it gets cold.

I buy tri-axle loads of wood & cut them up the year ahead so they get nice & dry. I look forward to using the SS for the rounds also.

Thanks for any advise on the SS and the kindling aspect of it.

I also have a fairly small stove & small house, use a lot of kindling & small splits. The SS will make kindling faster than any other way of splitting. Plus does the big stuff just fine. Don't see how you can go wrong.

Or.....should I just get a Dirty Hand Tools 22 ton for $999 at Lowes or an Ariens 22 ton at Home Depot for $1199? I have been drooling over the SS for a few years, but I don't know if I can justify the extra $. I am not planning on going pro anytime soon!

:dizzy: I am sooooo confused!

The time it will save you can be used for doing other projects. With the SS, you can split ALL of your wood in 1 weekend without killing yourself and then take your time stacking. But you will find that the SS takes the work out of splitting and makes it fun.

As for kindling, as Don said, very easy to make a boatload of kindling.

No way I could go back to hydro after using a SS. Making kindling with a cheap hydro would be painfully slow!!!

Like Mike said, using a SS is fun...

I guess only you can decide about the price difference, you didn't mention the SS price, but I think mine is the BEST!. My only complaint is I never heard of them when I was 20 years old. I can't believe how much time I would have had for other things over the course of the last 25 plus years had I saw or looked into the super split!

Thanks for the responses. Even wife says SS. And.... she is okay with the cash expenditure! I am the "el Cheapo". I still have the same 8lb. maul I had 35 years ago with the mushroomed top which SHE uses very well!

I am getting in contact with him tonight.

My head is spinning. I am considering turning up the thermostat.:blob2: ...........NEVER!!!!!!!!!

I am still breaking in my ported 346xp...hmmm...race to make kindling, someone with a supersplit, or me hitting some tops with the 346...hmmmmm It'll cut medium and small...fast...real dang fast.....and I know I most likely got another 1 or 2k coming in useful RPMs soon...

Anyway, you asked, some splitter, then a ported 50. You won't need to worry about kindling ever again...plenty of kindling on every tree you cut down usually. Heck, a stock 40 would do it as well, even cheaper, just a muffler mod and limiter delete.

If I drop trees, I ALWAYS keep the small stuff. The 020avs makes a bunch of kindling quick. But I like to split the dry stuff again for kindling.
