Elephant hunting or elephant sniping off a rest? :D Nobody would be able to hunt with something like this and to make a light enough rifle to carry in this calibre means the recoil would bust you up pretty bad. Also a .600 Nitro will knock down an elephant even with a misplaced head shot - as far as I remember the .700 Nitro was released just to make rich people think they had bigger willys :)

The big Holland doubles are something to behold. I think the late Owen Rutherford was the last pro hunter to regularly use a .577NE double against elephant. I believe that the .700NE was designed after Purdey supposedly sold the rights to a customer for the 'last' .600NE
I would think that a nice Heym magnum mauser chambered in .500 A Square, 500 Jeffrey, or even the .585 Nyati or .577 Tyrannosaur would be a nicer choice against the elephant.

Not that I would ever pull the trigger on one of these monarchs. I used to use my .460 WM all the time, but have mostly retired it these days.

Chris.

I just sent the joke on to three of my pilot buddies.

Yeah, I sent that on too.
LMAO!!!

:D

You're 100% correct on the reason the .700 Nitro was developed in regard to the last customer comment. I'd read about that but forgotten the story
.460 Weatherby? Legend :D One tough SOB round...

The 460 can be made to rumble - just like the old factory loads used to. You know when there is pressure when the brass is extruded into the extract port of the bolt and it takes a heavy pull on the bolt to open the chamber. The original loads were HOT.
Owen Rutherford used to carry a cut down 460WM - 20" as a backup rifle, and loaded 600gn solids. These would reportedly penetrate an elephant from any angle when called upon.

Yeah I've had that before on my .25/06". Case life goes to the pack and you only get 3-4 loads out of a case before the primer pocket is as loose as a juggler's pocket. The CCI Magnum LR primers funnily enough are slightly bigger than others on the market so you can get a few more loads :)

"The CCI Magnum LR primers funnily enough are slightly bigger than others on the market so you can get a few more loads". - When I discovered the Magnum CCI primers were slightly larger than other primers, I thought it was a manufacturing defect. Like you, I soon found those 'defective' primers could be put to good use in rounds with blown out primer pockets. - Duh, maybe they were actually designed for use in hot cartridges where the primer pocket would get enlarged.

Ah so,, that would explain today's fail at the range. A bloke I was scoring for at 300yards,, bang! one away bang! 2 away bang 3 away click ?? hmm misfire cycle the bolt click pull out the round with RO due care and look no primer ?? Some said teasing him he's failed to put it in at reload, I twas thinkin how can you do this, the grains would fall though soon let you know so a primer dropping from a loose primer pocket could be the answer.

Any hoo todays 303 shoot was a poor turn up only about 4 blokes and there's a 303 comp next March 10th http://www.langlangrc.com/calendar2011-12.pdf

My no1 223 was going ok but I friggen forgot ma bipod legs tsk tsk. I reckon I soon gotta get a better scope the 24x56 niteater focal sweet spot is wee tight so hard to keep a good clear picture with ma wobbly head.

Hey Guys,a question for you all if you dont mind.
Im looking at getting some chaps (finally) has anyone had good or bad experience with the Stihl or Husky chaps?
I here a lot about Labonville on the forum, but because im built a bit like Gomer Pile !! i need to try before i buy any clothes...even with all the ajustments its just not worth the risk with my stick legs.eg tried a pair of Homelite branded ones in Bunnings the other day and,um,er run out of leg adjustment and they are to loose.
The Stihl and Husky fitted ok,but i havent read much about them here to get much of an idea how they last etc...i presume with those two companies they would be ok,just wanted opinions

Cheers Dave

I've used many brands a lot comes down to the method of tie on buckles vs zips vs Velcro and how they go for ease of gettin them on n use. Try on a few as you have been n see which suits you best then pick the colour that goes with your boots undies or eyes
I seen a few that have wedge and tool pockets that's cool and be mindful that top buckle gets a lot of use more often it fails if light weight

Currently I got a pair of blue Stilhs with buckle and Velco lower leg as I get em on n off a few times a day short haul work n there Ok

yes the Stihl ones are very good i just got some of them the other week, i got the top of the range ones with the hivis down the side, and they are fire and Elec safe too, cost a bit more but better to get on and off with buckle and velco lower leg, i had the old style Stihl ones for 15 years with no probs!

Thanks Mate and welcome aboard!! i must say the Stihl ones looked very well made to me.

I have a few pairs of stihl chaps from here and the US. They seem to be very adjustable and don't think you will have a problem.
