Looking for a reality check please fellas, if you'd be so kind.

Am trying to find a way of affording a very small mobile yarder. Something like this would be nice but beyond the budget and somewhat overkill for my needs:

I've a tractor skidding winch already and am thinking of lining up another, something like this, that can be radio operated:

I'm wondering if I should be even thinking about building some sort of fold-down tower I can partially fix to the tractor winch body and have myself a wee small/thinning high-lead operation.

Do you guys think it is a possible plan worth running passed an engineer to see if a suitable tower could be sorted for such a winch?

I doubt I'll have the $ for much more than this sort of set-up (double drum would be great but noCanAfford), as my plans include radio remotes for the winch, tractor, and the big expense of radio chokers which don't even come with a jar of Vaseline.

Should be able to build a detachable frame for your skidding winch with maybe a 3-4m tower and snatch block at the top. Then just anchor your tower to the front of your tractor to get some triangulation happening and you should be good to go.
 
Can somebody update me on the Adler shotty? Is it now coming but only 5 shot mag? And when's it due? Tried google but no definite answers! Just tried catching up on this dribble thread after few weeks away and my head hurts....

Do they specify a weight for those bars? They look bloody heavy. Front end drop much? Bloody roo proof tho!![emoji106]
I ain't been right through the specs Vince, but around 90kg I believe 4 the bar alone.
Protection was what I wanted, travelling to all the race calendar I follow.
I reckon headlight aim won't alter to much, with all those Huskies locked in the back :)
98% of the km travelled, is in the bush, with prob 60% of that dusk till daylight hrs.
My biggest concern is side clearance or (rake) at the front outer edges.... There'll be no steep gully/ creek crossings anymore I feel.
I should look @ replacing them boring steel rims as well lol!

Your going to go round the first corner and think WTF, I'm sure it handled better than this.

That a lot of weight to have out the front.....will make the arse end lighter too if you ain't carrying a load....

But it will have a tighter turning circle, especially in the wet and mud

Yeah I s'pose.

I don't know what the bar weighs on the cruiser but I do remember the first corner I went around I thought, ****, that stuffed the cornering....I don't think about it anymore once you get used to it.

Lovely set up Jason, a lot of those have been set up on cruisers and such over the years and they are just the ticket.
My bull bars were never strong enough to stop big roo's doing damage however I couldn't come the price of those, you can so good for you.
Your right about driving dusk and dawn,,,,, it can be a lottery sometimes.
My latest Triton has a factory bar that is a poor excuse for anything except it looks like it may stop something.

It'll be noticeable, you can't get it any further forward of the axle centerline so it makes a huge difference (it's called 'polar moment of inertia') but you'll soon forget what it used to be like.

It's no different to those of us that have, say, an ARB or TJM bar and Warn type low mount winch.
All up that weighs 90+kg.
It's just one of the compromises we make, trade one thing for another.

A decent bar I'd just so needed in the bush, and it always amused me when city based 4x4 drivers would say "been driving 20 years in the country and never hit a roo, so a bull bar is just a macho affectation" and I didn't have enough fingers and toes to count the number of roo strikes I'd had in the preceding six months.
But apparently that was impossible as I only lived 4.5 hours from Sydney and there weren't that many roos and wallabies (let alone stray stock) running around, or I was just an idiot that drove too fast.
I'd then have to patiently explain most of the strikes I had was when traveling at less than 50km/h because the roos were that thick, that often they'd run into the side of the Landy or Patrol.

No Fecking idea.
