hey all,

a few auto questions:

can a small pin hole leak in a radiator hose, create a false reading in the expansion tank when the car is off and cool? Ie will it let air into the system, which gets trapped and doesnt show the loss when checking the reservoir?

If a turbo is leaking air around the perimeter of the cast iron turbine hosing (not the cast alloy compressor housing) could this in some way be linked to the oil consuption my engine is showing without major leaks???

what is a good way of flushing powersteering fluid from the system when changing out the steering box?

out of my league mate, i can tell you my rodeo was passing a little oil into the exhaust inside of the turbo, maybe thats why it went so well, but it blew up bigtime and $6600 inc GST later its going again and for sale.
my lesson learned in my situation is,,,,, sell them from now on at 4 years old while they are still going good.

I told you I was slow........:D

I'm currently sitting here trying to write a frigging philosophy assignment ATM. :(

Philosophy? You'll get a fail writing that while conversing with us lot!

My Patrol has just started to consume a reasonable amount of oil lately! :msp_scared:

Well with the Patrol it's disconnect hoses.

don't know about turbo's but the hole in a hose it will let air into the system and stop drawing water from the

expansion tank and start useing water to the point that if you don't keep an eye on it she'll cook

To check point 1, give your hoses a squeese, they should be firm. If they are not you are losing air somewhere. First place to check is the radiator cap.

If your motor is consuming oil, check what blow by you are getting. Diesels never see negative pressure in the inlet path, which is why I installed a boost only gauge on my Patrol. You are either losing it through the rings, the valve guides, or as blow by which goes into the inlet path. I have a catch can on mine and I will drain about 50mL every once in a while.

Point 3, I would use power steering fluid. You dont want to use water, or anything that is flammable.

Hope this helps

I'd get kicked off the course if anyone knew I associated with any of you lot :p

Ours has started to show a little oil is getting past the stem seals/valve guides.

Hopefully new stem seals are the fix.

sorry, I should have said I know there is a pin hole and where it is. Its in the main bottom hose from radiator to pump. Its been rubbing on the powersteering reservoir. Ill be keeping a keen eye on it. A new hose will be ordered tomorrow along with picking up some Tecaloy extra cool coolant. Im not getting any leaks on the grond at idle when at full temp and nore parked after a full 45 min run with hwy speeds and towing 2t. My concern is checking the level may not be telling me the truth.

How much oil and how many km on he new donk ?

Do a flush before you remove the old box.

Put the front end up on chassis stands with the wheels off the deck.
Remove the return line, jam a piece of pipe in it (3/8" or 1/2" ?? I can't recall) and point that at a big catch container on the floor.
Cap the return on the bottom of the reservoir, have some fresh fluid handy and someone to pour it in.

Start engine and start pouring fluid through, jump out and push the wheels from full lock to full lock, pausing at full lock for a second or so, then shut down when 4 litres have gone through.

Rip the old box out and instal the new one.

Remember the box has a bleed nipple on the top cover to bleed air out too when you fit the newbie.

I really like Transmax Z for PS systems that spec an ATF, but a good lightweight MTF like Redline MTF or lighter could be even better.

FWIW late model Falcons use a lightweight MTF for the rack/PS system.

I'm over 330k's now Rick.

Are you going to change them with the head still fitted or are going the full hog on the head?

We're at 400000km now.

It can be done easily enough without dropping the head Al, I did the Landy without compressed air as the valves can't go anywhere with their style of heads, but I'll probably go the whole hog and shout it a head gasket too.
