The reason I cut the tree this way was to get these shots so that some day I could show someone, with pictures, this cut we're talking about; not because I had some technical maneuver going down.
I prefer to make a backside up-cut to half way or so through, sometimes taking out almost what would be considered a 'wedge', but is more like 2 or 3 kerfs wide, tapering to 0. Then come in at it from above, determined to meet your up-cut exactly. The kerf will close, keep the saw moving and it'll 'jump' out and follow the rules of gravity. Note in the third pic that the 'spearpoint' is mud-covered, having hit the ground vertically as often you will intend when using this technique.
