Thinking of modding my splitter...Advice?

I have a Swisher splitter that has a 12 hp B&S vertical shaft that has a belt driving the pump. What I like about it is that when it is cold, I can release the belt tensioner and start the motor while it is not driving the pump. Once warmed up, engage the tensioner, and away you go! Had to replace 1 belt this year, cost $11.00 at the local NAPA. Otherwise, the splitter works great!

FWIW,

Thanks for the input jags and mga,
Ok then, I'll just pony up for the 2-stage pump. Can I survive with the existing 2 gallon reservoir? Will the existing valve be OK?

2 gallon sound a bit minimum to me. You can increase that fairly simply by adding an auxiliary tank somewhere and piping the return hose in there.

i gotta agree. considering the hoses and cylinder size, 2 gallons will be recycling fast thru the system and most likely over heat faster. you want to keep the oil as cool as possible.

I have to agree with mga and harry on this. And harry has a pretty simple solution to adding capacity to your tank as well. I would have to think that with something like a 16 gpm pump, you would want greater than 6-8 gal. of fluid. More would be even better. I personally built a 15 gal tank and run about 12 in the system. It works great as a big heat sink. Oh and your valve should be fine, most will handle 16 gpm pretty easy
