I have wanted one of these from the time I learned that they existed but never expected to find one. It arrived two days ago and I brought it out here to the cabin (where I have my shop) yesterday before even opening the box. It was more beautiful than I had expected – though a bit on the dirty side.

Here it is as arrived:

Yes it is a 137cc Stihl Contra S (for Super).

I plan on cleaning it up in the next couple days and will post additional pictures of the progress if there is interest amongst you all.

As you can see it is kinda dirty but appears to be in excellent condition overall.

I will also be asking assistance as I progress. My first question is does anyone have a way of dating this saw by the serial #?

Here is a pic of the plastic bonnet…

Obviously the STIHL logo badge is missing and I’ll be looking for one of these (I think I’ve seen them on eBay but haven’t taken the time to look yet).

Does anyone know a way of cleaning up the Contra Lightning S lettering? I’m not a very steady hand so won’t attempt to re-paint it.

Actually, since this saw is in such good cosmetic appearance I probably wont do much to it other than a clean up and a bit of polishing it’s worst points.

More later. I’m on a very slow connection out here in God’s country so want to test and see how long it will take to upload all these pics.

Grrrrrrrrrrr! I've been having a hard time with the site all night. I had to redo the post three times as the site would lock up as I was previewing the post so I'd have to start all over again. I'll go back and see if I can edit it. The pics do show up for me...

Time for me to go to bed. I've reloaded the pics 3 times and can always see them fine on my computer but the site has frozen 4 times while I was uploading so if it didn't work this time I'll delete the thread tomorrow. Enough time wasted.

I've never had problems uploading before but this new photo management system doesn't work for me...Carl

no they didn't come though but i can use my imagination on how beautyfull it is though but you'll get it one day on a slow connection

Well done Carl Im looking forward to the pics ! Re badge I may be able to help just let me find where I put them and check they match up.
As for date have a look back at my post on the Contra info thread I posted up the s # of mine and we know my S is early 64 so that may help ?

Best part is the bonnet and cylinder cover look in good shape!
Any other parts you might need should be easy to locate!!!!!!

Hi Dave... Good to hear from you. Yeah as you can obviously see the badge is one major/minor flaw. Should be easy to remedy. Appreciate you looking for one.

You are right about the bonnet. It is in surprisingly good shape - as is the whole saw. Isn't it you who has the Contra GS? Hummm!

Can't wait to get it all cleaned up. I'll try another post then and then when I get it running.

Now to try posting one more pic:View attachment 169553

As you can, hopefully, see it is a 36" Torrington (made in USA) roller tip bar. Love it! Haven't searched but anybody have info on Torrington bars?
