Got an email the other day asking for a quote on the removal and stumping of two manitoba maples in the rear yard. Thought to myself "Great, that's the perfect job for me to bid on. Got a email today from the Guy " I already hired someone" Thanks .. Then I look at what I sent him last " I can come this week or on the weekend".. Why even phone two people or more if you will go with the first person that shows up.. This really grinds MY GEARS!!

Its the first time that has happened to you , you must have really patient people in your area .... I had a guy call during that funky storm July 4th weekend didn't answer cause I was working called the guy back 1hour later and he said don't bother someone has already been here and I gave the work to him , I remember back in 07/08 people were thrilled if ya called them back that week now they have it done that day crazy times were living in now LOL

Your not going to sell many jobs through email. I make a firm appointment and sell and close the job and sign them up. Easy as that!

Got the email yesterday, answered back that night, told me he got someone today. Sorry that pathetic anyway you look at it. Gave an email back saying "Thanks for the chance to bid". What is wrong with people?

yea ,it happens to us alot ,really pisses me off whne u get the job and then get home to a message on the landline saying they are going with somone else..wtf!!?

I don't worry about it if i lose out on a job i get another one instead so it all evens out, i never go a day without work so all you can do is stay competitive and the jobs will come.

its the principal of it,why give me the dam job ....when the same thing happens over and over makes u beyond nuts

Ricky, when this happens just say " Well I looked at the tree and wrote the bid for 125.00 but thanks anyways"

I have done that before. Not that low but low enough and to see the look on their face. Most of the time it dont bother me much but you will have your days. I think I do pretty good at selling and closing jobs and I know most of the other tree guys here couldnt close a screen door.

I think you guys have the wrong idea about sales.

A potential customer extends an offer; a competitor beats you to it. You blame the customer?

I take those missed opportunities and try to leave a favorable image for the next time. Most people that call me have more than one tree. I just thank them for calling me and I ask them to think of me next time they need some work.

Then I make notes in my database, so that I will be ready for the next time they call.

It's still regional, demographic's, etc......

You guys crack me up....
Like if you were going to spend a few grand on a service like, getting your house painted or tiled, getting landscaping done etc, and if you were unfamiliar with the work... you wouldnt get a couple of quotes? Of course you would, unless you're an idiot!

But at the same time, if you did get a guy who turned up, and his price was reasonable and you had a good feeling about him, you might decide not to waste other peoples time and simply go ahead with it, then have the courtesy to let the other bidders know that the job has been lost, right? Seems like fair play to me.

What were you thinking, he emailed you for a quote so he should have waited as long as you want, and then automatically given the job to you? You win some, you lose some. I bet you don't complain when you're the first guy there and win the job and you're grinding other guys gears ;-) Oh wait, maybe that customer shouldn't have given you that job! He did promise to let another guy bid on it.... Now you'll be complaining that the other guy came in and underbid you and you hate being the first bidder, you want to be the last bidder who undercuts everyone else and that people are just wasting your time to get a price that other people can beat etc etc etc.... Some people to nothing but complain ;-)

We get lots of calls, some I gaff, ya know the ones, that leave demands on the answering machine "be here at this time at this place" or the ones who want a price over the phone. We make appointment's and I get there as fast as I can, sometimes they don't wait for me. I get some cranky ones "you didn't get over here fast enough" Sorry but I am not at home waiting for the phone to ring (right now anyways!) I don't get mad, just move on to the next one. Like said above, some just want NOW. I never get upset about a missed bid or a under cut, as long as you put out a good product the work will come.

I only quote saturdays now. It's very efficient in terms of getting around for me, because the area we service is pretty large. You do lose a couple customers who don't want to wait until saturday, but often those are the ones that would have been just time wasters anyhow. By doing all my quotes on the same day I make a good loop and often have to drive only a few minutes from one to the next. I can get 15-20 quotes done in a day that way, and can spend about 20 minutes at each quote which improves the odds of people going for quality service which is what I'm trying to sell. We get enough work that we don't have empty days, and it brings the type of work (and income) that I'm looking for. I don't bother too much with demanding people, because often they have called 3 or 4 guys and will give it to the first guy to turn up. I let the guys who have no work get those kinds of customers.
