Every Tom, #### and Harry are tree experts. I thought I had seen it all but this takes the cake. There is this old man in the neighborhood, got laid off and decides he is going into the tree buisness. He gets out his books and start reading. Next thing you know he is down at the Capitol and taking his test ! Lo and behold he is now a "Licensed State Tree Expert " Go Figure, next he takes the test and obtains his ISA certification. Lets check it out he has 2 Chain Saws, F450 Pickup , some hand saws , couple of ladders, couple of lanyards, hand tools , ear protectors, helmet, chaps and 3 boxes of Ropes. Heads on down to Nationwide Office buys his self some insurance and Bingo look out boys here he comes.

Well now here is where it get real interesting. This clown is going around, elevating and thining trees and get this he is charging $30.00 a tree. He got this contract at a Local Mall and undercut the existing contractor by nearly 50 %. There must have been a couple hundred trees 15' - 20 ' . He is all over the place. Saw him the other day with a Tow behind aerial lift and he is taking down these trees that had to be 65-75' high. He took three of them down in a
day. Went back the next day Bucked and loaded all three trees in less than a day. Had these fancy Pneumatic Carts and an autoloader for the wood. Rumor has it he is going to take the wood back to his yard and split the stuff for firewood. He sells the stuff delivered and stacked, got himself some young bucks, real presentable types and he's fetching high dollars for the wood causa the stacking and all. How long do ya think this ol boy gonna last?

not long at 30.00 a tree i dont start my trucks for less than 400.00$

because he cant possibly be running legit with workers comp i pay 3000.00 on every 20k i spend in wages for a climber. then around 900-1000 on ground guys per 20k of wages.

so right off the top every year im giving the state quite a few thousands to be legit.

thats not including my liability insurance or vehicle insurance i think plates for my bucket truck or 400-500 a year then the chip truck is even more because its a higher class truck.

No idea who it was

I thought Nationwide won't cover commercial tree care.

Nationwide, allstate I really have no idea who he got it from. But maybe you are correct about the workers comp insurance and the gas card . No way this guy will end up anywhere but broke before long. In the meantime he is putting a hurting on men like the guy I work for. He has all the latest equipemtn and does nothin but stree Saftey. He's forever saying be sure.be safe. Like abroken record.

I don't give all of you guys enough credit for your business perception or prejudice for that matter.

Sub the man on your jobs if you can. Just pick a job you don't want to do, and get him to put his bid on it. Bullboom! Money for meeting a guy.

trees for free

a local company calls itself Trees for Free. they will remove hardwood trees for the wood, no charge. they then charge up the wazoo for clean up or softwood removal. I made a sales call to grind the stumps at a client that they had worked for. They had removed all the oak for free, running a skid steer through planting beds and over the lawn, then charged them 2k for pine tree removals in the backyard. I would have been embarrassed to leave a clients property in that condition and I saw the pine stumps in the back yard and the access. there is no way the pine removals were worth 2k. The client was happy because all the oaks were gone for free, that's all they seemed to care about. So I bid the stump grinding at 2k. They never got back to me.

Deep pockets or not, he seems to know something about business. Not likely he's not studying his books.(finances) Unless he is an idiot, he may have an agenda, or plan. It's not unheard of in some business areas for someone to break the competition, causing them to fold by underbidding them. Illegals have done it to several trades out here, and today their rates are as high as anyones.
Also the possibility he is charging a lot more then people are aware of on some jobs and making more money then you think.
I see a lot of real fly by night outfits drive new chipper trucks pulling new 50,000.00 chippers, they must be making money somehow.
It seems to be a sad truth that generally people don't care who does their trees, so long as its cheap.
The only answer I can see is to try to distance one's self from that market where they operate. They'll always be those few who care and know(and afford) and want proper, honest tree care. But I think that market is shrinking fast. Beastmaster

if what you say is all true... then this guy is doing everything by the book and competing on a level playing field with the same costs as everyone else.

he will find out real quick that he's operating at a loss. one doesn't get deep pockets from operating at a loss for long.

assuming he's got capital for equipment that doesn't need to support debt service. then he's operating on a different level and has MUCH lower operating costs. one could easily justify tying up capital, knowing that you can sell equipment later and recover most of your $$$ back. equipment if purchased smartly will make you $$$.

sure sounds like the old man is a legit and serious competitor....

No offense but it would "appear" that you may be a stalker or a little jealous to have such specific info about him on a personal level and the inner workings of his business and to know in specific the time ANOTHER company invests in a job is a bit suspicious to say the least , I would say to put the same vigor in your own endeavors as your dedicating to another and maybe his existence would be non existent JUST SAYING ......There are people operating businesses on different margins , maybe he could care less about the money and wants to just #### you off ......

Sorry, but it sounds like this fellow is playing by the rules and beating his competition. You may know a few things about him, but he knows his bottom line far better than you do. Bet on that. I have to say, here, that I have some serious doubts about the legitimacy of your post. It has a "fishy" feel to it.

$ 30 dollars to thin and elevate a 15 to 20 foot tree in a mall parking, and there is over 100 of them, sounds a little high to me I would be happy to do them for $20 per unit.

I think your right something in this post is fishy
