Stacking todays firewood take almost got me. I was making a new pile between a tree and a old fence post which I framed with scrap lumber.

The pile was 14 feet long and 6 feet high by 20". I just put the last 2 pieces of wood on top. The pile made a creaking sound. So I walked behind to take a look.

When I was examining the 2" by 10" board the wood WAS stacked on the pile let loose. It was like in slow motion so I escaped. :angrysoapbox:

My 14 year old nephew, who was only allowed to wheel barrel the wood because I didn't want the pile to fall over, thought it was darn funny.:jester:

He walked away laughing say his job was done and told me to get busy.

The kid told me to start a new row when it was about 5 feet high. But no I wanted to stack it all in one row. :buttkick: Live and learn.

Sometimes I think that my end will come with my woodpile falling on me....

Since woodshed space is always at a premium and you can't have too much wood, I stack mine PDH in a lean-to type shed: as high as I can reach and then I toss lots more on top and mound it up. I use a tined cultivator with a long handle to snag it and pull it down.

I've also noticed that when stacking against the wall of a building, the woodpile almost always begins to lean outward over time and will sometimes fall if not propped.

I can't figure that one out.

A dog's help

I had an old yeller lab that used to wait until I had the wood all stacked and then she'd start pulling pieces off the bottom until she got the pile to fall.
It was a miracle around here if I only had to stack wood once.
