Timberhauler, you got me thinking about our long lost American Chestnut. Has anyone here been cutting long enough to have harvested any of them. Now that is big hard wood. My grand dad's property had many chestnut trees with over 6 foot bases. He made his entire hunting cabin with Chestnut. We still own it today and it is still all original chestnut. When I was a kid some of these giants were still standing dead but I bet I have not seen one in 20+ years. I do know some folks in West Virgina are pretty close to bringing the American chestnut back blight resistant.

I've only cut a couple of em' in my life....There is a row of them where my wife's grandparent's used to live....You don't see many of em' any more, and when you do,people usually want to save them.

Uwharrie NF

If I have my trees straight, Uwharrie NF (Pee Dee / Yadkin river valley-Central NC) has some pretty old chestnuts up in the OHV trail area.

I did not know any American chestnuts were still around. My dad has tried growing some but after 8 to 10 years the blight (spell?) kills em. Are the ones you all have mixed with the Japanese chestnut or did the blight not knock them all out down there?
