Your right i'll start doing some testing tomorrow and figure out where the problem is before I start replacing cables.

Lack of usage...

Biggest issue I run into with old equipment is lack of usage. Check and clean all battery terminals and ground connections. Check starter connections too. Also check the starter switch/button and its connections. Battery cables are not cheap to have made and can be a huge pita to remove and install (on any dozer). If you have an implement dealer close, odds are they have battery cable and a crimper for the ends. New cables are a last resort for me though. [I actually rented their crimper once just so I didn't have to remove the cable]

I am not familiar with these old Deere's, but there are a few of them out there still being used. Keep your eye on the temp and oil pressure guages... and easy on the ether!!!

Good luck...

As mentioned check the obivious problems first, connection and cables.if they look good remove the starter and have it checked at a local rebuild shop if you have one.
I own a starter/alternator rebuild and have seen this problem many times. It doesnt matter what kind of batteries you have or what kind of cables you have,,if the starter is bad none will fix your problem.

If you starter is bad ask about a newer gear reduction replacement.in most cases you can upgrade to a newer type starter for just a few dollars more than the original.and they will crank unbelievable better.

Also something to keep in mind is this is a positive ground system so inform you shop of this when you take starter in.

Your 2010 diesel has a glow plug system, if you use the plugs "use no ether". As to your track adjuster problem, next to grease zerk should be a plug remove it, if not remove zerk "I guess that's how you spell it" you may have to bump idler on something solid, grease should come out and remove tension. To fix the adjusting cylinder that leaks the only way I know is to drive out master pin on track and pull idler forward then remove cylinder and replace seals. Good luck with your project, lots of old John deere still working every day, but like anything made of metal with a motor something will break. I got nothing done today had to replace starter and hydraulic hose on my JD 440 wheel skidder, stuff happens. Take care Chris
