So I recently tore a ligment in my foot and hired this kid that had some training threw a course in high school. Shows up with his own gear. Goes up the tree no problem but when he took the top out he did a " jump cut " which to me could of barber sheared. I know how to make notch cuts so the wood falls and lands flat but I'm not sure how to teach this skill... Says he has been doing it 3.5 years but seems like he should know all this by now. Hoping my foot heals real fast or find a better climber soon..

Can you get him in a pile and show the cuts/ explain concept on the ground? Relate to him the compression and tension forces involved. Scale it down to show him the dynamics of it when it falls. It sounds like you found a good climber, is he a good listener? Every high school kid has done it for 3-1/2 years (would that make him about 13 when he started?). Lay down the law on who's boss. Good test of your mastery.

Unless you are a gifted teacher and have truly mastered your craft to the point you can explain the reason for every single thing, leave it to someone else who is. You can do a lot worse than buying Gerry Beraneks 'working climber' series of DVD's. Don't matter how many years you've been in the industry, I guarantee you'll learn a lot yourself. The series 1 and 2 are great for climbing, series 3 is falling mostly. Get the lot at a good price. No matter what you're trying to show, you'll find it in there, shown clearly and obviously, expalined in such a way that anyone can pick it up. Best money you'll ever spend. Baileys has it.

Jump cut, snap cut, block cut. Those are what ive heard it called something very useful or very dangerous depending on the situation. Tell this kid to study up, give him some pointers on how to make a notch then get him to do it on the ground. Takes awhile to get it down so maybe start looking for someone else and use him as a groundie?

Is he making ya money gettin it done with out any damage n strife?? So save your concerns don't micro manage the kid show him a few of your ways on the ground share ideas, he may have a few tricks of his own for you. I,m still always learnin & working for a new company finds many new methods.

Tore yer foot eh, I feel ya pain brother. I twisted ma ankle real bad some weeks back tore the top ligament that supports your balance then did it again then flipping again. Its now weak loose needs strapping. I canna take a step without fear it will fail under load. MD says about 4 weeks to stop hurting and 3 months if lucky at my age get back to strength. SOB I was going to go skiing with son and canna even walk the dawg

hint avoid dam pot holes and loose logs, try to build up strength with resistance exercise of the foot just holdin yer balance on the bung foot is effort for me.

Thanks sir. Your 100% right about the foot. As for everyone else. I've been climbing 10 years and have enough experince I can put any tree on the ground climbing or in a bucket it. As for teaching him on the ground... It's not the same as in the air.He can climb and that was about it. He wasn't very good at that even. He did no call no show monday because he was in jail I guess. May give him another chance so... teaching him may be still in order.

He made it 40ft and that was about it. I guess I could buy the vidoe that explains it and make him and the other guy I'm training watch it... But I think I can explain it just as good. Getting him to listen maybe the problem or maybe he is just affraid of heights...And that would mean he picked a poor job to learn... Kid seems flaky and he's not just out of high school but that is where he learned in a occupational class. He is a year or two younger then me. When he was learning to climb... I was putting 150' pines on the ground and Silver maples over houses... I also watched my father climb and cut from a bucket my entire life tho... But I truely think it's a hieght and confendince issue. Hence why he made it 40ft and had to come down...
