That's a shocker, people do that a lot over here without any damage, they think it "bushes" up really nice, but the trees don't tend to die from it. Obviously that one did.

Pity, looked like it was bit a feature in a nice garden & all.

I agree, it seems the older the tree the less likely it is to recover from abuse, especially after the storm damage and yet there is another poinciana in the garden next to this one that is 'pollarded' in the very loosest sense of the word, every year and keeps coming back 'bushy' for the summer, I keep waiting for it to run out of steam!
They do tend to get great rot pockets in them complete with Schefflera and Ficus seedlings sprouting in the lovely compost.

Here's a pic of some Casuarina topping.

Unfortunately a lot of consumers have no idea that topping is bad, and there are no requirements for any certification to do tree work so they assume the guy with the saw knows what he's doing! I think I feel a newspaper article coming on.

Here ya go; a short one for starters.

http://www.treesaregood.com/pressrelease/press/Topping.asp

Will the poinciana owner grant you an interview, complete with poignant recollection of the gone-but-not-forgotten floral display? How s/he trusted the saw operator, only to be stuck with a dead tree?

Lawsuits and fatalities from topped trees failing (see the HI thread in the injuries forum) get sudden attention, but ya gotta start somewhere.

Bermie, those casuarina's look freshly cut too, another shocker.

Treeseer, I like that letter, are you suggesting we can use it?

Ekka visit the site and ask ISA if you want to. It's viewable by the public. Several others there too on other topics.

Topping trees to death is prosecutable here under statutes relating to Unfair and Deceptive Trade Practices statutes. Basically the contractor is shown to have lied by selling him/herself as professional and doing something blatantly unprofessional. There must be similar laws down under right?

Ekka, NZ has a formula too, NZIH something I think. It may be asier to sell the application of a more local appraisal method.QUOTE]

Its NZAA New Zealand Arb Association, originally to qualify, you had to have a cretin number of trucks and chippers! Or how much money you paid for the license...

Glad to say its improving!

I agree, an industry standard must be enforced. But it seems people don't care if their topped tree dies in Aussie.

Yea professional tree lopping makes me laugh, any arborist would seriously think it was a joke!

My boss makes me do what the client wants, and half the time they don't know what they want! Topping seems to be the first thing that pops into their head.

PS i finish with that company next week.

And another paper

And this is the top 3 companies in another paper nearby

to me topping is removing the top, lopping is any prunning work.... back to a stem - lopping, cutting a face off - lopping, taking the top off and leaving it as a square bush - topping

We are not seeing as much tree topping over here as we use to. It might be our countrys fine leadership. Maybe we should send some troops over to help ya all out.

Yeah, you can lead a horse to water but you can't make it drink ... in other words, some people just don't give a chit so your troops might enjoy some R&R without seeing yankee flags every 10 feet.

This is what the Germans think of GWB's fine leadership:

Wonder what they thought of US leadership in the WW2?

Do you speak German? Didn't think so. Almost though.

Hey TreeCo,

Actually, that's really cool that you are seeing a general decline in the tree topping.

And, speaking of spikes, get this:
I once met this environmental activist that was studying the spotted owls by spiking up the trees to look at the nest, thereby exposing the cambium for pine beetle infestation. Save the owls, but destroy the forest!

Education is the key to change.

Oh, as a matter-of-fact, I do speak German (as well as Spanish, Afrikaans, and Creole).

No, but actually I can speak Hungarian and my mother can speak 6 European languages, Hungarian, Yugoslavian, German, Polish, Russian and English of course.

How about you? God bless the victims
