Well, it's about time! We have 2 Asplungh chippers from the 60-70's range. They both work great but are getting old. One is a 12" drum and the other is an 8" drum. Both work fine but it is time to upgrade.

So, we are getting one of these: http://www.pik-n-pak.com/coneheadDC50.htm

Price? $32,000 CANADIAN! It takes a 15" piece of wood. Very nice. I will be sure to take pictures and let you guys know how it performs! :)

I've wondered about what they exactly mean by discone. They don't show any pictures of the blades on their website, only the ones of the cone head. I also would like to know how well it processes palm fronds, although you probably don't have any over there. If it can chip palm fronds as well as my Gravely 395, that would be the next chipper I would get. Here is a photo of coconut palms chipped by my Gravely 395.

Koa Man, I talked to a dealer in Miami, he said they don't have that chipper over here. He said sometimes they will only market to certain areas in the world. I just cant get over how well it chips.. You would lyao it you saw what the 280 xp does. We do have a 280 hd with a 200 hp diesel that does pretty good, but not like that Gravely 395

vharrison2,
If you are looking for a Gravely chipper, they stopped making chippers around 2002. You will need to find a used one. I get someone asking to buy that machine from me about every 2 months, the latest one 3 days ago. I tell them all it is not for sale...I love that little machine. If that discone can chip anywhere close to what the Gravely does, I would seriously consider selling both the Gravely and my 18X and just use one chipper as a compromise. Right now I need two....one for big stuff and one for palms.

I hated palms out in CA. I've given blood to many times to mention on those things. I don't envy anyone whose job includes a steady diet of palms. We ran that stuff through our brush bandit but it just wasn't worth it with the chipper jamming all the time. Its a hard jam to undo as well. I would be really surprised if these Discone chipper guys didn't have some sort of demo video available.

They had a demo video of it at the last show in Detroit. They were running cornstalks through it. Not sure if that's even near a palm but it looked half way decent. Discone? Take their cone head, cut it in half, and mount the cone on a disc. Like a witches hat tipped sideways. I think that's what it is anyway...

First, let me start off by saying I have NEVER used a self-feeding chipper (before today) in my life! Always just a drum chipper (no feed wheels). Today was a VERY pleasant surprise!

This machine will take a 15" piece of wood. I put in a 10" across piece of Norway maple (hardwood) about 6 feet long and this thing just ate it up. I was soooooo giddy! :)

The chips are bigger than our current drum chipper BUT I think the bottom bar (anvil I think it is called) needs to be adjusted a bit.

The engine is an 89 horsepower Kubota diesel. There is also a 125 horsepower engine available as well. In the next few days I will bring my digital camera to work and take some pictures for you guys (I need new batteries first).

Nice machine for a nice price (at least compared to the Vermeer 1400 that we were looking at last year!)

you cant go wrong with a kubota engine imo ,i have used the smaller kubota engine's but never anything close to 89 hp
