That mutant looking thing is a Philodendron bipinnatifidum and is quite common in Perth. The love to climb up other trees and are noted as being related to a liana so perhaps botanically they are closer to a vine than a shrub or small tree?
Did a clean up for a client maybe 18 months ago who had a really thirsty one in his yard that would send a root(?) into his pool every few months or so. The pool water would kill it off and then it would send another back down in there. Weird!
