I just received a pm from a member that has been here since '02 and has neary 500 posts. He was asking me if he could pm me questions about climbing. He's worried to ask the questions here because he's a landscaper that wants to learn how to climb, and he thinks he'll get flamed for asking beginner questions.

Sure, more people should use the search function initially for a specific question, but that doesn't mean they should be fearful to just ask.

It's a shame we have some people here that get bent outta shape when someone asks a question, or talks about something they are doing that is wrong. Maybe they don't realize it is wrong, and that's why they are asking. It's our job then to set em straight, without flaming them. If they post a thread in the wrong forum, let the mods deal with it. Maybe send the poster a pm telling them nicely, instead of making an ass-chewing post for all to view.

Perhaps that explains all the lurkers. They are scared to actually register and make a post because they see what happens to others.

Hey, I'm a nice guy, and I always will be. Don't ever be afraid to ask MB a question! And you shouldn't ever have to worry about asking ANYBODY a sincere question.

Responding to this individual's questions via pm short-changes all the members here who may benefit from the question/answer.

So PLEASE! Let's not scare off any new blood, eh?

It is a shame to think that you can't ask questions on a forum without getting a earful of nonsense. I have been in this biz for a long time and know that most in it are always willing to offer good advice, but be prepared to hear some nonsense with it. Learn to filter and not take it personally. I know the search function works but a lot of info on it it 'old' since new techniques and gear is being created and used its good to ask the questions again.
Never be afraid to ask a question even it seems silly 'cause the answer might save you some trouble or prevent an injury.

Well put!

Why isn't there more self-policing here? If someone cops an attitude and jumps on someone why don't other members call them out more often? Is that the sole domain of the mods or owner? If so, they're falling down on the job.

It doesn't do our profession any good to perpetuate or condone this behavior.

If needed, use the PM or email for personal attacks.

If you look back in the archives there are many newbies who have joined and have developed into respectable arborists.
Carl, Neb, Rborist Mike Maas to name a few have all come a long way :)

Perhaps a junior climbing forum would be the solution ?

That is all a shame; and has existed as one of my worst nightmares for this place.

Once again i fear; for every single such incident we catch knowledge of; 20 more have slipped by unnoticed, whether never signing up, never posting, or doing so just briefly.

i don't think such an atmosphere is conducive to the original intent to this place; making such things hijacking the whole effort; and debilitating the existance here for some into survival rather than sharing exchange. As with trees, survival reactions are not as refined as those not made under stress; reaching for fuller capacity.

The depth of this place, TB, ISA has been more than about any classroom to me; perhaps save the actual field. But even there i need calm focus; not distracted by pushing and shoving; mebbe a lil'joking to keep it moving; but nothing to derail the flow of the work at hand; perhaps that is a lesson to learn here too. As any other system; there is only so much energy that shouldn't be wasted on 'counter-target' actions.

Too well i take notice; that this is not someone with no or few posts in; but somehow is stunted back from particicpating even after giving it a good start, getting over the first jitters whatever. i find that a very dreary barometer of some of the dynamics mentioned. i do like the fact that the most prolific amongst us; leads; yet is the one also found to be most approachable; and then brings it up to attention.

Thanx Butch,
-KC

That would be interesting to read in, One of the members here did a small job and let me go with him ( I just groundied for him) to see what it is like in your world of work. I find it interesting and like to learn what I can, I'm not wanting to get into the bizz but it does look like a challenge and I love a challenge ,although I did point out to him I would also like to learn on taking care of a tree more than taking the tree out. By the way WT thanks for taking me along and I would like to go again in the future if you get some more and I can get the time to give you a hand.

Hi Butch, this is one of your best threads. The biggest loss in life is the loss of human potential. If that's the case then we are all deadbeats. lol.
Anyway, there is nothing more gratifying than sharing knowledge with someone who is truly interested and aspires to to higher heights. Inspiration is nothing more than seeing ourselves as we could be. Part of the deal is playing host to all the big brother advice along the way.
The world is full of airchair enthusiasts and if it wasn't for them we wouldn't have an audience. The ones who believe it's in their blood should fear not.

If you do a little work with the search feature, still need help, and ask nicely, you get at least one good answer.

Sweet! But, how many bad answers does the poster have to suffer thru?

That's my point. ;)

Who wants just one answer?:blob2:

I think it's time for a poem.

The Ordinary Man

If you and I should chance to meet,
I guess you wouldn't care;
I'm sure you'd pass me in the street
As if I wasn't there;
You'd never look me in the face,
My modest mug to scan,
Because I'm just a commonplace
And Ordinary Man.

But then, it may be, you are too
A guy of every day,
Who does the job he's told to do
And takes the wife his pay;
Who makes a home and kids his care,
And works with pick or pen. . . .
Why, Pal, I guess we're just a pair
Of Ordinary Men.

We plug away and make no fuss,
Our feats are never crowned;
And yet it's common coves like us
Who make the world go round.
And as we steer a steady course
By God's predestined plan,
Hats off to that almighty Force:
THE ORDINARY MAN.

Me too. That's why I stop in here, hoping the talk will run more toward tree care than removal. Still hoping.

That poem was one of Service's lamest. HE wrote such good stuff about EXTRA-ordinary men. What's so great about someone "Who does the job he's told to do, plug away and make no fuss," ? Yeah in a way it sounds like the subjects of the Stones' 60's song Salt of the Earth, the noble proletariat.

But rebelling against orders to do wrong, to fuss and change things, that's what makes the world spin in new and better directions. Without tolerance of new voices, progress doesn't happen.

Hello Guy, I am glad you pointed that out. RWS talked about all walks of life and could describe them more than they could describe themselves.
I also neglected to commend you on the way you took the sail out of the wind of another member who wrongly called you an a$$hole.
Regardless, here's a more eloquent poem by RWS.
John

Men of the High North

Men of the High North, the wild sky is blazing;
Islands of opal float on silver seas;
Swift splendors kindle, barbaric, amazing;
Pale ports of amber, golden argosies.
Ringed all around us the proud peaks are glowing;
Fierce chiefs in council, their wigwam the sky;
Far, far below us the big Yukon flowing,
Like threaded quicksilver, gleams to the eye.

Men of the High North, you who have known it;
You in whose hearts its splendors have abode;
Can you renounce it, can you disown it?
Can you forget it, its glory and its goad?
Where is the hardship, where is the pain of it?
Lost in the limbo of things you've forgot;
Only remain the guerdon and gain of it;
Zest of the foray, and God, how you fought!

You who have made good, you foreign faring;
You money magic to far lands has whirled;
Can you forget those days of vast daring,
There with your soul on the Top o' the World?
Nights when no peril could keep you awake on
Spruce boughs you spread for your couch in the snow;
Taste all your feasts like the beans and the bacon
Fried at the camp-fire at forty below?

Can you remember your huskies all going,
Barking with joy and their brushes in air;
You in your parka, glad-eyed and glowing,
Monarch, your subjects the wolf and the bear?
Monarch, your kingdom unravisht and gleaming;
Mountains your throne, and a river your car;
Crash of a bull moose to rouse you from dreaming;
Forest your couch, and your candle a star.

You who this faint day the High North is luring
Unto her vastness, taintlessly sweet;
You who are steel-braced, straight-lipped, enduring,
Dreadless in danger and dire in defeat:
Honor the High North ever and ever,
Whether she crown you, or whether she slay;
Suffer her fury, cherish and love her--
He who would rule he must learn to obey.

Men of the High North, fierce mountains love you;
Proud rivers leap when you ride on their breast.
See, the austere sky, pensive above you,
Dons all her jewels to smile on your rest.
Children of Freedom, scornful of frontiers,
We who are weaklings honor your worth.
Lords of the wilderness, Princes of Pioneers,
Let's have a rouse that will ring round the earth.

Lambert posts plenty of other Robert Service threads, I'm sure you'll like some of those.

I've gotten blasted for questions, but often deserved it, looking back.....

This place is fairly mild-mannered, though. My bro once got TOS'd on AOL for asking someone if they got claustrophobic in their narrow little mind. :D That was good.

But on other online forums...like I visit one with an average of 1500 members online 24/7...there, you'll get taken to the cleaners - and your momma, too - for asking a stupid question or for reposting or for not having an avatar. I mean, my brother posted this for me once because I didn't have one:

We could stand to be kinder, though. Wouldn't hurt.
