No it doesn't apply to myself ;) Just Mow, Thall and Co. are Stihl dealers that use this forum for their own business purposes (against better knowledge they mislead people here who seek advice on chainsaws, to buy saws of their own brand). I'm neither a Husky, nor a Stihl dealer.
I have two chainsaws of each brand so I'm not that biased. As I have said many times before I think Stihl has many good saws. The only Stihl I have bashed is the 290, but I'm not only one doing that.. I would bash the 455 Rancher also.

Peter did you just say the word "misleading"?? Wasn't it you that said after one face cut the air filter on the 290 would need to be cleaned? Now is that really true or is it "Misleading". Another misleading thing is you said is you only bash the 290. Ok if thats the case then you bash the 310 and 390 too since they are the same saw with different pistons and cylinders. So thats another misleading statement on your part. Finally and foremost I don't use this site to inform or to mislead people into buying any saw they want, I don't need to. I was selling Stihl long before I ever came to this site. So tell me Peter who is misleading here???

Well Thall, I think you don't have to be Ph.D to understand the irony in "the face cut". I think a normal person would understand it as "the air filtration is junk". If someone asks me what I think about the 290, I would be honest and say that I have tried it twice, and I think it was POS. What's wrong with beeing honest in that case? I would say it to him face to face, why wouldn't I write it to him then? I don't see that as misleading. What I find misleading is when someone asks for opinions in the choice between two specific saws of other brand and you start your organized talk-him-over-to-Stihl campaign.

So instead of admitting the comment on the 290 you made is misleading you choose instead to say you have used it twice, TWICE. Peter come now. You accuse Mow and me of giving out false info to sell Stihl and here you admitt to using a saw TWO times and make a judgement that it is no good. Very misleading and very fast to pass judgement as well wouldn't you say? Seem to me it may be you that has the agenda here based on how fast you discredit a saw after using it twice. Whatcha think??

When the chainsaw lord comes to the earth again,
They will know his name as he calls them to their pen,

Little Stihl sheep, o come unto me,
No more dealers, time to be free,

Little Husky sheep, o come unto me,
Having few dealers made you feel so empty,

Little Dolmar sheep, o come unto me,
Lifteth yourself above number three,

Now they're all together and happy again,
But soon to be divided, each to their own pen.

Peter/Peter, come now, I don't use this forum to talk everyone into a Stihl (just most of them). If you have ever read any of my posts when comparing the two saws (Husky/Stihl) I have always stated experiences with Stihl as there are no Husky dealers in my area except Lowe's, Tractor Supply, Northern Hydraulics, Sears, etc.....etc......
So you see why I push Stihl is not only because of quality but Dealer Loyalty. Something Husky lost a long time ago.
And if it makes you happy. Everybody that looks at a 290 I usually sell them a 270 or 280 because it is a better saw.

Just Mow,

I've got no beef with you. You, Tommie, Andy and others seem like great Stihl dealers. But, they're not all great, IMHO.

I've purchased a 029 (long story), FS80, BG85 and BR600 from my local dealer. I've purchased many plugs, trim line, and repair parts for these Stihls and a Toro mower from this store. My most recent experiences from this dealer:

1. My wife bought the BG85 home in a box, so much for "demoing" it for the customer.

2. When I bought the BR600, the proprietor seemed offended that I wanted to know how to start and run this blower. I didn't see the same controls as other Stihl products and wasn't sure. I got a 10 second demo.

3. I brought my mower in for a major repair. Three weeks later I was told that since I wasn't a "pro", I was not a priority. Took it home, took it apart, found an IPL on the net, ordered parts. Oh, I had to come in a pay for the parts before they were ordered.

4. In March, I considered a 440, but the proprietor refused to talk to me about saws. Sent over a rookie with a brochere.

5. Saturday, stopped in to look at 660s. Treated like a leper in the middle ages.

Now, you can count the number of Stihl delaers all day long. I just know that they don't all count for me.

So, Just Mow, just call me Just Know.

Point taken Joat and your 100% right, there are many shady dealers outthere from both camps, no question about it. BTW Joat, I'm not that far from you, get your butt up here, oppppppppppps, lol

Tommie,

Now that thought has crossed my mind. I used to be in the DC area several times a year. Might be time to take the boys (ages 6 and 10) to the area to see the sights and take in the history.

Now tell me Tommie. Will you do an Elvis sawing performance for my clan?

Jack

How can you possibly need more than two times of use to make your impression of a saw? I pick it up and feel that it is heavy. Check the chain to see if it is sharp, put it in a log, see if it has power, not really, see if the filter cloggs after little use, yes, feel if it vibrates, yes, easy to work on? seems ok.
Have I missed some hidden buttons or special functions on the 290? Otherwise that was it for me. When you have spend so many hours working with chainsaw as I have, I don't need more time to make my judgement of a chainsaw. I won't say it doesn't cut wood, it does. But that so many buy it, that's the mystery.

OK, Peter. Riddle me this. Stihl is number 1 in chainsaw sales. Right? The 029/290 is their number 1 seller. Right? If the 029/290 is so bad, how can this all be?

Now, I'm sure that the 029/290 will not work for you and ole Troll. If you had to use one, you'd probably go crazy and get hauled off in a straight jacket. I know I don't want that, and I'm pretty sure Stihl nor any Stihl dealers wants that. Listen up Mow, Tommie and Andy. You want to force a 290 on old Peter or Andy? OK, there you go. See? They're not trying to force it upon you.

Now many of us homeowner types cut occasionally and have a budget. We have other hobbies. Might be college football. May be water sports. Might be woodworking. Might be having a beach house, beach condo or even a place in the mountains. So we go to a dealer and say, "Well, $300 for a saw I'll use 3, 4, maybe 5 times a year on makes sense". Mine's been used like that since '91, that's 1991, and it's still works fine. See, good old American boys tend to use what they have, and sometimes it's not the best. Take my ride. I used to have a BMW 530i, sport pack, manual (not the manual of AS fame) transmission. Nice, high tech VANOS engine. Sweet. Now I'm toting the family and me around in my Suburban. Yep. Old pushrod engine that traces it's origin back to 1954. You weren't around then, were you? This old 5.3 liter motor (we Yanks call 'em 323 cubic inches) does the trick. I know, I know. Two rides and you'd be passing judgement and all.

So, Peter, the old 029/290 is NOT the BEST chainsaw. But most every weekend, some Yank, heck mayby a thousand Yanks or more, pull 'em out of the garage, fire 'em up, and go to work.

Sorry to have to open you eyes, but, that's a full report from the good ole USA,

Jack

PS: Peter and Troll, please make a link to this post to save yourselves from future embarrassment.

Bingo, you make your point, as you put it "that was it for me". Not everyone is you Peter, the point you can't seem to accept for whatever reason. Now since you have made a great observation of the 290 and can't wait a split second to share it with others let me ask you this. I've sold many many 290's, 100's of them. I've gotton no complaints. Why is that? Could it be not everyone is you, hmmm???

As far as the mystery as to why so many are sold, thats easy. The 290 comes with the same back up as the pro models. If something goes wrong with it just bring it back where ya bought it, it gets treated the same as a 460/660 or any other Stihl. Can you say that of the 455 and other home owner Huskies sold in the big chain store, the answer is NO. So the mystery is solved, who do I send the bill to for solving the mystery Peter???

Groan... the tape, must be an "8 track" stuck on "endless loop"...

Peter - I've used many Husky's about as much as you've a 290... and I wasn't WOWED or even overly impressed.. sure they cut wood...... and they are decent saws, but I don't try to extrapolate my limited experience to undeniable "facts".

"Normal people" don't get hung up on the air filtration. We've been there before... Surface dirt has little to do with filtration or performance. Most Husky filters are just a filthy as stihl filters.. Why? "normal people" don't clean them either and whether it takes a day a even a week to get dirty makes little difference.

You know what I like about the 290? If the customer is uncertain about it, I get to up-sell for more power (310), better (280), or quality (260), or much more (361)... But they will leave with a Stihl.:buttkick:
