i haven't been on the forum for a while but came back the other day to search up some saw info. this is a good thread, we get to see what everyone's been up to lately. been a busy winter/spring but now that the rain has let up we do have a few logs that need milling. I have two big (30"-38") oaks, two cherrys, an elm and a skinny ailanthus to mill up. Here is some progress on one of the oak logs:

as you can see, here in NYC I do a lot of my milling right on the sidewalk! my shop is in an industrial area so people don't mind too much, and there are plenty warehouses around so when we need heavy lifting done we can throw a forklift operator some lunch/beer money to help us out.

this winter I milled up a big cottonwood and had a bunch of really cool looking textured pieces from the slab cuts. this little section looks eerily like a crocodile head, i gave it to a friend to use for bench legs.

in other news my 394xp died. the spring on the H screw disintegrated and the screw began backing itself out during a cut. I was loading a slab in the truck while a buddy was milling and heard the motor start to really zing and by the time i got back to where he was the saw was spewing mix through the muffler. piston is scored, cylinder is scored, bottom end is okay. now she's in parts in a box awaiting a rebuild. In the meantime I acquired a really sweet freshly rebuilt 395xp from a member on this site with a gutted dual ported muffler, super low hour top end and minor squish adjustment and it runs like a banshee. this is the second saw i bought from an AS member, both transactions were as good as they could be.

I'll try get pics of the rest of the logs up when we get to milling them.

Was trying to decide if 'noodling' a few pieces to run through the bandsaw and making some pen blanks for this weeks 'fun-on-the-lathe', counted?

Been in the upper 90-ish degree F range with high humidity....sawing is the last thing on my mind.

Scott, you are getting 90's weather.... I just came back from our place in the CA gold country and I was up at 5:30am this morning burning in the rain. It's crazy...

Yesterday, I tackled the rest of Walnut log (see post #15).

Got it rolled over the way I wanted it & elevated with a high-lift jack.

Did a bit of trimming and put on my homemade guide rails.

This is an old 076 that looks kinda rough but is a joy to mill with. I need to replace the AV mounts.

Splashed some water on the crotch. Pretty nice figure I think.

awesome!
how many boards at what size did you get from that?

I wound up with 18 slabs total. It was a 16' stem that I cut into two 8' logs. Fifteen slabs 1-1/2" thick, two @ 2-1/4 and one @ 3-1/4. It was all I could do to load that 3-1/4" slab by myself.

I'll pick up a sheet of plywood tomorrow to get this stack covered.

Some of the lumber in this stack is from other milling adventures.

I'm drooling on my keyboard looking at that stack of black walnut. Nice stack!
You and me both!

I missed out on a walnut last year as I didn't have a truck to move it, but I do have a truck now I could do it with. Of course now that I have a sawmill and a truck, I haven't heard of any walnut trees this year...:(

Thanks so much for the kind words. I've got the walnut covered with a sheet of siding and the ends painted with anchorseal. I sprayed it with Tim-bor as I was stacking it. Powder post beetles are bad in this area. Walnut is not their favorite, but they will still munch on it.
