Started new tree care bussiness in MN two days ago while still working my day job with communications company. I put an ad in the local paper and it will be coming out tomorrow, but worried I wont get calls. Hoping I wont have to go door to door but will if i have to. Any good Ideas Should mention been climbing trees for six years but always worked for someone else

Do good work and get positive online reviews- try yelp or service magic.

You can also post free ads on craigslist but it often only attracts people wanting the cheapest price possible. It does help you get the ball rolling though.

Get your license, insurance, and ISA cert too. Makes a big difference.

Signage on your truck and park it where it can be seen like at local store. Put add in local rag if you live in a small community. Always leave a clean site you won't get better advertising than that. Don't drink beer with clients it's not professional and be on time. Always return phone calls promptly and don't take on more than you can handle. Don't be cheap on your estimates it makes you look desperate and damages the market price. Remember that all your gear must be replaced using money so ask for it! If a client is complaining about the cost before you start that is a warning sign. And lastly never be afraid to turn a job down.

Good advice! Never be afraid to turn a job down. I found it very hard to do, but when push comes to shove, it is in your best interest and best health (usually) to step back and say I am sorry. I fear no tree, but the cheap prick that owns that tree may be another story!

creating jobs\clients

Good info on post so far. Some one posted about hanging out at the coffee shop for leads. If ya get in good with the older citizens\clients. Your name will be pasted around more. The retirred generations talkes a lot more to the neighbor than the working generation. Try working where the money is. Around golf course or highend burbs...

What I have found in my area is creating a good website to get more business. Newspapers and phone books will usually get you older (retired) leads. 75% - 85% of the people go to the internet. As mentioned, get your name on your equipment (neighbors or people driving by, stop an ask for business cards). Invest in some shirts with you name/logo printed on them. If you are serious, you need to be and look professional.

I would say to make sure any ad you post, no matter where you post it, to proof read and make sure everything is correct. Some people will judge the kind of job you do by whether you care enough to spell things correctly and not have a bunch of typos. If you can't spend the time to make your ad look professional, why would your work be any different?

This time of year calls prolly wont come in that much, unless storm damge?

whatever you do.......stay away from the phone book advertisement!!! I surveyed my calls/customers, followed my stats page on the carrier for my ad & it all showed very poor feedback!

get some biz cards, place ad in news paper, maybe some T-shirts/Hoodies & be patient, tax season coming up so right now there is a lull in spending...especially on tree work! the season where im at usually kicks in bout march/april depending on weather.. good luck!

LXT..............

I wouldn't trust Service Magic at all. Google them for all the complaints!

I have to disagree; I have used servicemagic for my cleaning company for 3 years and could not be happier. You just have to know the ins/outs on how to use it. Bottom line, you turn the leads on when you need em and beef the ones that are bogus and they will refund the per lead charge if it is bogus or outside your listed services.
That’s just one avenue I would suggest, you would definitely want to put up a website and get on angies list and any other free sites to put up ad's.
