Sooooo, today I got the wifey a little husky 137. Determining factor, price/cc's. A stihl MS170 was at $180 and a little bit small, I wanted to stay at least 2hp or around that area, the 170 is at 1.75. The next one up, the ms180 is only like 1.6cc's difference and the price goes to $240, then the ms210 which is a 2hp saw, that baby runs in at close to the $300 range. I'm all for a Stihl, BUT I can get a saw in husky bigger, like 1.5cc's bigger to be exact, same hp for $180 bucks, and I love love love my 266 and the 288. Sooooo, I wouldn't necessarily say i'm converted to husky, but damn, couldn't stihl be a little competitive??? Either way, the wifey is a happy camper. :biggrinbounce2:

I replaced a Husky 137 with a Stihl 180. I can tell you from experience, running both of them in the same day....The 180 walks all over the 137.

edit: 180 here is $199

Must be nice to be in a competive area. I called 3 Stihl shops and could only get a 180 for as low as $229. I even knew she wanted a Stihl, unfortunately, I just couldn't justify the extra $50 for a smaller saw. Now that you said that though, I think I'll go rent one for a day, have her try it, if it's better, I'll take back the Husky and go with a Stihl. She does like her new husky though...

So you guys know, I did buy the little husky from a ma and pop shop. I prefer them to big stores...

My first real saw was going to be a Stihl. One day I went to Lowes and noticed that they sold Husqvarna. I really liked the feel as compared to the Stihls. I found a local shop that supposedly sold Huskies. They had like 3 models to choose from. I wanted something bigger than the 350 so I went online. I found a very knowledgeable saw shop in NY where I purchased one. Later I found that there was 1 other reputable local dealer that had recently stopped selling Husky because Lowe's & Sears sell them. So when I bought another saw, It was a Stihl. No, I don't like it as much as my Husky. But one day I flooded the Stihl. I took it to the local dealer were I purchased it. They dropped everything right then and there and I was cutting wood again in an hour! I would have had to pay shipping & wait around if the Husky had problems. As much as I like their products, Husqvarna has done it's dealers (like Spike60 or Bill's Saw Shop to name a few) wrong by selling to Lowe's & Sears. Do they really think that someone serious enough to spend $350-450 would buy it from the same place they get light fixtures?

Im not particularly loyal to either brands, I have a mix of saws mainly made up of stihls but I do really like the huskys as well. Some of the echos and dolmars I have liked as well. IMHO the 335 wasnt any good and the 019 was equally bad. Love both the 372 and 44. Saws, some rock, some dont.

I have never been a ford/chev kinda guy, I just go for what works, and knowing companies these days you cant say that every product any one manufacturer makes is worth backing blindly.

Stihl dealer presence is much better than Husqvarna in the places where I live and cut. So when I started out and bought my first saw, Stihl was the natural choice because there were Stihl dealers everywhere!

Like he said. Bought a new Mac Pro 650 in the late 70's. Inherited my brother's 090AV when he passed away. He was a feller in Oregon/Washington in the late 70's/early 80's. I had some work done on it and started looking at the line. There are a lot of good Stihl dealers in this area. Husky just doesn't have a foothold here other than the consumer line which are sold at TSC and hardware stores.

Im not partial to Stihl.....I had a Husky, went to trade it in on a Husky. I could have had a Husky much cheaper than I pay for Stihl.

At the time I hadnt ever run a Stihl. My dealer sells...well DID sell both, so I got to fondle the Stihls and they felt better in my hands.

Im not one of those die hard Stihl fans....I do, however, like spending money on what works and feels right while Im using it. Just happens Stihl is what feels right to me.

I equate Stihl fans to Republicans and Husky fans to Democrats......The Stihl fans dont run up Stihl by bashing Husky....The Husky fans think they are doing Husky a favor by bashing Stihl!!!!!

HAHAHA Joking.

I have ran alot of saws,The 009 & 084 were my favs for a long time. There is just something about a Stihl sound that can cure any ailment.Headaches,Hangovers,Tendonitis you name it.After you run that stihl for about 1/2 hour its all gone.Thats what got me the sound is mesmerizing.

edit:cant knock echo for dependability though

That's funny, I was just thinking about that yesterday running the 066 and 3120. The 3120 at idle sounds something like a funny car at a drag strip, but when you open it up sounds more like a boat motor, getting a nice baritone pitch moan. The 066 has the muffler opened up a bit more, but sounds much tamer at idle, but when you open it up does have a much meaner sound. Much smoother than the 3120 though. Things never fell off the 066 when milling...have to crank them a bit tighter on the 3120. Good isolation system though.

Dude, you laugh, but I think you hit the nail on the head there now that I think about it. Every big husky fan I know is a democrat and stihl dudes are republican. Every JR owner I've met just hates everyone. I guess that means they remain unaffiliated, lol. :biggrinbounce2:

Well then the JR fans would be Liberals.

independents prefer

I'm an independent and I like both Husky and Stihl.
Fell in love with the 266 for a long time.
But cast aside much of the Husky world because the 266 beat up Stihl enough and forced them to design and build the 044 etc.
The biggest evidence of this is check out the parts schematics for equivalent saws for the same time frames. Husky spends a lot of time making new parts for what didn't work. If you ever had to maintain 40 of the dang things, this would have driven you nuts too.
I'd suggest that the insides of both are just fine. Sort of like Republicans and Democrats. It's the exteriors that cause all the problems.

It is the other way around in my area. The last saw shop left selll's Husky's and sell to us redneck republica's. The home and tractor dealer sell's stihl. All the new windsurfing bleeding heart liberal's buy from them.

Any brand will do

Each have their place. No brand loyalty here. Stock and 60cc under give me my metal cased Poulans. Modded is a different story. Stihl 066, Dolmar 7900, Husky 357, soon to be modded Partner 5000 plus.
