Does it have lots of little spikey balls on the branches or underneath it?

Hard to tell but here in Georgia, Sweetgums are everywhere and I have seen them masquerade as hickory...lol

Sweet gum is good for lots of stuff especially truck bed floors, the europeans love it for furniture, it makes light stiff lumber, not too hard though.

Don't think it was sweetgum atleast I've never seen one look like that. The top branches are all broken off and look to have been for awhile so no gumballs but I didn't check the ground. I'll have to go back this weekend

Its tough to tell from your photos, keep us posted.

Trees in question need to be ground checked...just like deer! Knock it over and then check what it is....right after it is milled into useable slabs!

I was thinking the same, but cottonwood is one of only a handful of deciduous trees we have up north here, so there are tons down your way I'm not familiar with at all.

Almost looks like Choke Cherry??? But dude, just cut it down and make a pass on it. If you like what you see, keep going bro.
