2024 garden season

What is isolation distance for squash? I found out that you aren't suppose to plant red raspberries next to any other berry. Looking for a spot in my yard to plant a few.

I don't know about the berries.

Never heard that about red berries before! 67 years ago my mom had them in the same patch and never had any trouble with them! I dont do raspberries, too seedy and too much time needed to mess with them.

Looks like the end of my growing season has arrived.

The thing is, what should I do with my garden?
The potato plants still look gorgeous - should I go ahead and dig them up now, or wait until after the tops die back from the freeze?
What about the beautiful tomato plants? Can I cut them back and cover with straw? Will they survive the winter and come back in the spring?
What about the garlic? They all sprouted and the greens are about 10" tall. Should I cut it back and cover with straw?

Last pepper harvest of the year yesterday. Was 29 overnight so the plants are toast.

Garlic should be OK. Tomatoes won't make it. Dig the potatoes.

Last little bit I took to auction today. Stihl lots of brussel sprouts to harvest but we'll just freeze and eat them later this winter.

I hated to do it, but I've cleared out the garden.

I pulled up the tater plants and found only a handful of taters

I cut back the tomato plants, packed with straw and covered with a pot - just in case they make it through the winter.
I hated to do it, they looked great and still had maters and flowers.

Oh well. That's all until the spring.

So, this is what taters are supposed to taste like - who knew?
SO good! All natural, zero chemicals. Fresh from the garden. YUMMY.
Boiled in salted water, topped with butter and a little black pepper.

I think next year I'm planting only potatoes.

We only eat home grown stuff here. Taters are super from the garden. Plant them early spring and they will get big!

Would you need drainage holes in the bottom, or are the side holes enough?

Iam going to disagree wuth that statement , sort of. I have been growing taters in pots for a few years now, while I have changed my methods a few times, I have managed to grow some decent size spuds, in abundance. Now I dont planr enough taters to feed the neighborhood but what i do plant seems to produce well enough.

What? Are you serious? And here I had it all planned out how I was going to build a new raised bed for sweet potatoes.
I remember, about twenty years ago, seeing a pretty big sweet tater raised bed in the back yard of an elderly Black man that I did some house painting for. I'm thinking it was like 3' deep. His did really well.

I'm going to try it. I especially liked how he was able to snap off the taters without disturbing the vines, then packed it back up for another crop.

once you take the taters off they will not make anymore! I proved that many years ago! The plants will only set a certain number and quit so IF you take any before they are ready you just ruined the harvest.
Removing them hurts the plants and they just quit.

I was wondering if they would put out a second time.
I'll take you're word for it - if anyone knows how to grow humongous sweet taters, it's you.

So, that being the case, there's no need in going to all the trouble of making that trellis/support for the vines?
