What variety of little tree is this, and where's it from?

Just a word of caution about using imidacloprid to control insect infestations guys.

Time your applications of it atleast one month before or after that tree's flowering cycle, regardless of whether you're spraying, drenching or injecting the insecticide.

Think about the bees and humming birds that feed off the nectar of the flowers.

Imidacloprid is dangerous stuff!

Yes that seems to tally with observations made in France and Germany and for exactly those same reasons. Neonicitinoids are good at what they do.... sometimes too good.

Ever used soil residual granular forms Jomoco? Any leeching issues that you have encountered in sandy soils?

Honestly I'm trying to avoid using imidacloprid completely OOMT.

I'm recommending removal of most trees that are chronically susceptible to insect infestations, and replanting with more robust pest resistant trees.

And when I bump into highly prized infested trees that would die without chemical intervention, I sub the treatment out entirely to a certified chemical applicator.

I still like to do a little nicotine based R&D on my roses here at home to kill aphids, using my cigar butts. It's extremely effective, more so than Sevin(carbaryl).

Thanks anyway Jomoco.

Jeff we have tried soap and water as well as white oil applications but soft scale are well able to resist and the level of infestation is extreme. As much as 20% of all twig areas are covered in the white sticky gunk they lay eggs in and the leaf loss in summer is so bad it looks like chemical poisoning. It is interesting that the problem is worst in the newer dwarf Syzygium hybrids and has far less effect on the old Acmena smithii stock. I guess the nursery horts chose the wrong stock years ago when they started cross breeding for hedge plants....

I see what you guys are saying and the same kind of things were going on with Plas BUT when I challenged him he stood up and met it. He was here the very next day with bells on.
I am not trying to be all upity with FTA but I sure as hell ain't gonna patronize him so he can go out and sell what we told him.
Besides FTA is so much more of an ass than Plas and FTA would NEVER be caught dead trying to climb a tree. FTA is ALL talk. Plas showed respect and true interest.

Well, what do you know? I have my first diagnosis and remedy to return to a client with. I told the HO I would do it for free. That's my pledge about diagnoses of any kind. It's free as long as I feel like I'm an intern about it. Whenever I really should be paid for it, I'll be asking for compensation from them. Count on it.

I wanted to say more here, but I'm exhausted. I spent a long time today and yesterday busting out huge yucca tree stumps from fence corners behind a patio and a house with an axe and my little and big pick mattocks not to mention all of the other stumps that couldn't be reached with anything but an axe and mattock.

I gotta go to Jack In the Bax for dinner tonight. Yuck It's too late to eat at home.

I'm good to go with that tip Jomoco. I'll check that class out now that you mention it. That book you suggested is only good if you know what you are looking at in the first place. I'd have taken it back, but I put it next to my ANSI and ISA pruning books.

OOMT, good thought about the bees spreading poison around the ecosystem. Will heed.

Now I feel sappy in the bull pen.

Well when we see a pic of FTA actually doing some work then we will know.

Well here than. This one is a few years old of me doing some fine pruning. Is that enough for you?

Rule number one: don't give it away.

Thats what I was thinking.

I'm serious. You should only be able to do that once you have been established I think.
We'll NEVER see any real work from FTA but with the other one you will ( and have). I hope all of you will remember all I have done for you by getting those pictures.
