im looking for a safety belt and strap for just queen palms 20 feet and under. any higher i will sub out.

If they are 20 ft and under, do them from the ground. If you don't feel confident climbing above 20 feet then be afraid to climb less. People die or wind up paralyzed from 20 foot falls. While you might walk away from a 20 foot fall and are unlikely to escape injury from a 40 foot fall, neither is a safe working height unless you can trust your gear and utilize it correctly.

even being up 20 feet i would still like to wear a safety belt. what would you suggest. and wear?

Go to Sherrill and get a Ness work saddle and a rope lanyard, maybe the Grillion, or you could make your own.

I thought the tie in requirment was over 6'?

Oh, I think that ANSI says 6' for tree work, but I dont feel like looking it up. Some ANSI nazi will chime in in a sec.

will those work for palms. im only doing palms from a good ladder. i have a pole saw but the chainsaw will do a better job.

Yes they will, take a wrap to keep it from sliding down if you fall.

To be ANSI complient you have to be tied in twice while running a chainsaw aloft.

What is a wrap? Is that something to hold the ladder?

Contourbs, You seem to have missed my point. Since you don't have the training and confidence to climb above 20 feet please stay on the ground. A chainsaw WILL NOT do a better job than a polesaw but you have the option of purchasing a chainsaw on a stick (known as a Power Pruner). Any tree saddle ,fall arrest harness or even a lineman's belt will add to your security if you try to work off a ladder. But you don't need to climb for the 20 foot stuff and shouldn't climb without both proper gear and training.l

With your lanyard.

Hey contourbs,

Ive done literally thousands of those palms, I too started off on a ladder ... took a fall and have spiked them ever since. They're a weed here, we cut them down like there's no tomorrow.

Some advice with working from ladder.

Put a chain or cable in the top of the ladder so it doesn't roll around the trunk on a flat rung.

If you can't have some one tending the foot of the ladder strap that in too.

Your ascent & descent on the ladder is one of your most vulnerable moments, so I used to throw a rope thru the head and take up slack on the ladder traverse.

Once up top strap in with a wire core lanyard. If going around the trunk is not good enough make sure you take in more than one frond.

At times with a ladder you'll have to go up 2 sides of the palm as sometimes you can't reach the rubbish around the back side. Other times the palm might have a huge bowl shaped head and you can't reach the big pods in the guts of it so you have to cut a hole thru the fronds and go up higher. either way, you'll have your rope and your lanyard (2 attachment points)

And finally, be careful not to drop debris etc onto your ladder.

I use a 1/2 inch wire core lanyard x 10 ft long with a Gibbs adjuster plus normal climbing line with a Blakes hitch.
