Backwoods said in another post that Nails, Knots, and bullets just add character. I agree. What all have you found in your trees? I've got a couple interesting things we've saved over the years, I'll try to take pics of them and get them posted.

One of the neatest things Dad brought home when I was a kid was a hand hammered spike with an eye on the end that came out of a big tree (Oak I think) They took down at Mt Vernon. This was in the late 50's early 60's. There is a small piece of chain, 3 or 4 links on it. The curator at the time said that the tree had been used to chain slaves under to to keep them out of the sun. I can't prove it, but I have the spike. Maybe some day I'll have some one look at it and see if it is period correct for the time.

Another time we were taking down Elm trees on the streets of DC and at about shoulder high Dad hit something that took the teeth off the saw. We later split the block open to see what it was. A chain saw file! My Dad started cussing his Dad, my grand father planted a lot of Elm street trees in DC 40 or more years before the incadent, Joe.
