Allright, lots of what's the best threads, what's the worst saw out there.

Maybe the wright reciprocating blade. My dad tried one out when they came out and promptly returned it. I just thought of the Wright when the name Edsel was mentioned

wdchuck, I think that is a great question and new thread. Personally I would have to say the 051 Stihl because it has that big tank sticking out and no center of balance. Although a reputable saw. Thanks.
Mark

Thinking of the Edsel, I'd have to say the new Farm Boss.
People either love em or hate em, and they aren't built too well.

I assume you're talking about the 029/290..

If that was the case, there are sure a lot of Edsels out there... and going /selling strong after 12 years?

Na... there are better choices...

I'll have to defend the Edsel here. I have actually had the chance to drive a 1958 Convertible. Very neat...push button auto, compass-like speedo, nice power. Just way too advanced for their time and a little bit of an ugly duckling but they were pretty advanced.

Think about the KMS-4...too advanced for it's time. Nice saw to be sure but not a great success. Now look at how many ppl are buying them up for big $$$.

Lotsa people love the Edsel too!! Thats kinda my point! :jester:

290 is like a pinto, possibly a maverick. an Edsel I think would be a Stihl 650, Dolmar 510, something that always has something just a little better above it for a few dollars more. Why buy a ford when you could get a Lincoln or mercury? Several huskies have the same problem.

Ok, I'll admit it. I used to own the Edsel of chainsaws.
The Husqvarna 570.
Just as heavy as the overweight 575, less power, not much cheaper, and despite all that, it really WAS a good runner.

Despite all the comments here on AS, I ended up with an 029 in a trade, figuring I would sell it. However, I ended up using it when a couple of 120' firs came down in our recent windstorm. I have to say it ran like a champ. It was set up with 18" .325 and I was able to buck up those firs easily in an afternoon. The splitting and stacking has been a different story. I sure can't say anything negative about the 029 at all. Starts great, doesn't bog down, easy on gas and the weight is okay.

They really are good running saws, just heavy and longevity is at question for hard usage.

How about the Husky 455 "Rancher". Not sure why Husky thinks ranchers like overweight and underpowered saws that cost more than the 350. I don't know anything about the reliability.
Brad

Doncha know? Ranchers are big and strong, and they like to take their time.
:ices_rofl:

good post.
A close friend of mine and big firewood cutter owns one (stepped up from echo) and he loves it. He let me run it shortly and I believe that saw deserves a lot more credit than what I hear on AS. It's heavier and less powerfull than a 361, but then it's a solid firewood saw that will outlast many other saws in the same category. I would feel no shame at all owning one.
just my 02cts.

You had to know the 029/290 was gonna be thrown under the bus. I have one and I think it's a good saw. It always starts and runs good. Sure, more power and less weight would be great....my wife thinks the same about me!!

For the price, it's a hard value to beat....especially once you mod the muffler.
