Whats the going price to take down a dead pine tree about 30 feet tall? Job required to merely saw it down, saw it up and leave it. Already did the job, took 20 minutes. The guy wanted to pay me a $100.00 and I said no, $50.00 was plenty. Who was right, the guy wanting to pay a $100.00 or me saying $50.00 was plenty? I think $50.00 for a 20 minute job is more than fair, how about it?

Haven't got a clue. But I would have said meet him half way at 75 and everybody is happy.

You get out of life what you put in. If you feel it was worth $50.00 that what it was worth. If he thought it was worth $100. that is what he would have paid. Don't worry that Karma may have a frosty sitting somewere for you on a hot day!

But it took you more then 20 minnutes,,,,,, if you figgure driving (even if you didn't, someone would have had to) You needed to set the saw up, gas, oil, sharpen the chain,,,,, even if you didn't for this job, it is work that went into your job.

I'm sort of the same way and low-ball my work, but I think we should teach each other to snach the $100.00 and buy our own frostys!

Those darn pines can be sappy!

lol, I know where that line is heading, lol. Your right though, got that stuff all over my hands pulling the limbs away. Was fun to run a saw after work though and get paid on top of it. The guy, like most people, told me beforehand oh its about 24inches around and about 50 feet tall. When I got there it was about 30 feet tall and maybe 16inches across the base. I priced it before I ever seen it and then after I saw it I thought hell this is half the tree he said it was so I cut the quote in half as well. He still wanted to throw a $100 bucks in my pocket though. I took $50.00 and called it day.

It didn't take 20 minutes. It took 20 minutes plus travel time plus fuel plus wear and tear on your equipment.

50 to take it down, 50 for the service call. you could have always taken it to him and saved the cost of the service call. Unless the guy is right across the road, you have to figure for his travel time and gas.

Thall it sounds like you did the fella right.....Thats the way i am, as long as i make a little money. When you do people right it will come back to you, meaning someone will help you out down the road. 50.00 sounded good for 20 minutes.

I thought about taking his 100.00, trust me and he wanted to pay it but for 20 minutes I thought naaaaaaaaaa, besides I was more less just playing with the saw. Heck I was home by suppertime and thats what really mattered most to me. That guy has tons of neighbors and he said he was gonna spread the word around so maybe next time I'll get a bigger tree to play with and can charge alittle more.....

if the tree was in YOUR back yard 20min maybe but

how did you get to the job?

how long did it take you to get to the job?

how long were you at the job site?

how did you get back to the shop/home ?

how long did it take ?

how long did it take to PM the tools you used on this 20min job ?

tell us this info and we will let u know how much u under sold this 20min by job:D ;) :hmm3grin2orange:

Thall correct me if i am wrong, but i dont think he is trying to make a living at taking trees down.....sound like it was a little side job to make a few bucks.

Well the travel time consisted of closing the shop door and driving up the street one block, trip took maybe 30 seconds. Far as equipment cost amd fuel goes your right but heck the old saw needed the dust shook off it anyway. I'm figuring he'll spread the word around his neighbors, in fact thats how I got involved. Last week I used a pole prunner and did some prunning for a guy across the street from this guy. That one was a freebie because I knew the man. Next thing I know there are a few neighbors watching and sure enough this week I'm getting bites...

Thall, by your description, $50 sounds fair. Was much travel was involved?

I once had a customer angry because I didn't charge enough for an auto repair. They had it in their mind what the job was worth and that's what they wanted to pay. Maybe they thought I was treating them like a charity case or something.

You be very correct. I do trees as side jobs and mainly just to get out there and run some saws, not into it for the bucks. I got one tree professional that tells me he'll give me a 100.00 for every tree I turn down because I'm killing him, lolol. I've probly taken down 50-100 trees around town and rarely ever charge over a 100.00 but I don't clean them up, its sawed down, sawed up and left. If I did the clean up now then prices would go way up, I don't get any fun out of the clean up, only the sawing..............

Thall i have a question? which saw did you use out of your collection?

Funny you ask, I took the 026. Funny part is I threw it in the Cuda and gave it a bath beforehand, sharpened the chain , hell it was like preparing for a big shin dig, a 20 minute one, lolol

You took the little man.....you wouldnt want to get out there with a dull chain, not even cutting pine.

$50 seems acceptable for the work you performed. I do a lot of work for the elderly and they ALWAYS try to pay me too much. What I do is I argue for my lower price three times, and if the client still wants to pay more then I will accept it.

I don't make my living cutting trees, but as a general rule I won't start a saw for less than $50. There are occasional exceptions for friends and (sometimes) friends of friends, or a neighbor. But if I have to go to the effort of putting my equipment in the Jeep and getting into my grubby clothes, it costs at least $50. The first full hour of work costs $75, and each subsequent hour costs another $50.

Hahaha, yup I took the little guy. Easy to run and easy on these shoulders that have bad rotor cups. As for the chain well I sharpened it but I got about 15 or 20 new chains for that saw so sharpening was mostly to see what my customers get when I do they're chains. The shop grinder does alittle better job than the one I got at home. The saw cut real smooth and chip size was looking good. Always wondered how well the chains cut for real other than the customers tellling they cut great. Now I know first hand that, what, yup, you got it, they cut great, lol
