more hints..

Piston obviously BURNED (damn near destroyed) by a LEAN condition.

Anyone think the rust IN the carb has anything to do with that?

Where did the rust come from?
 
i see you say its a 10 cent fix to save a burned piston and rust in the carb i didnt think stihl had any parts under $18 it seams any small part i buy is $18 sounds like your talking about an air leak mixed with wet? im fricken confused ok i give in to your superior knowledge andy
 
my guess would be some guy tried to cheap on the fuel and used e85. from what i've heard ethanol draws water if it's vented and chainsaw tanks are vented(i think). once he got to the bottom of the tank it started drawing water in and rusted carb which also caused it to lean out(since it was only water) and scored the piston. just a guess though. SOMEBUM - WRONG!!!! air + water just makes water with disolved oxygen etc..

rust=iron ore +air+water water in the exhaust sat too long destroyed the suck back preventer and got into the carb
