I keep it pretty simple... for the most part when it's cold in the house.

Once in a while we get weird weather and it will either leave the house too hot or too cold.

Last year winter hit... was 40ish one day and the next day it was -15*. I woke up and it was maybe 55* in the house.
And often in January or so it will warm up from below zero to 40+* and we get a mess of a mid winter thaw. That equals chaining up the trucks and wearing cleats.

Now if I lived somewhere that it was 70* during the day and 30* at night, my house at it's setup would likely not need to be heated.

40 is the magic number for our house. The wife might make a fire in the mornings, but a high of 40 or less means she'll be burning all day.

Sounds like I may light the first one during the next few days.
"They" are predicting highs in the lower 50s, lows around freezing... with a hard frost Saturday morning, somewhere in the 20's.
Although, "they" also say clear-blue, bright 'n' sunny with almost no wind, so we'll see... might not need one.
Either way, it will only be one or maybe two small morning fires (likely just burn the pile of thick Bur Oak bark I've collected in the basement)... and then we're supposed to jump back into the 70's on Monday.

I'll tell ya' what... we're dry around here, really friggin' dry... like dust (from harvest activity) constantly in the air dry.
And there ain't hardly a chance of rain in the 10-day forecast.
If we see 70's and the wind they're predicting for early next week, fire danger is gonna' be a major concern.

low 30s with a high of mid 50s for us this weekend with frost warning sunday.
I have just over a cord of poplar set back for times like this.don't want to get into the good stuff

Anyway ,back to the ops question.I build a fire anytime I need a little heat in the house.I buy fire starters by the case and if need will build a small fire every day to take the chill off.
when needed i burn 24/7

I have an old 2-story farm house with various air leaks and levels of insulation (or lack thereof). If I or my Wife walk outside and have the thought,"Hmmm it's chilly outside" there's a fire getting lit as I have plenty of wood and paying the propane company sucks. Out first Winter here we were going through $700-900/month in propane. Now it's more like $700-1200/year and still improving.
