Hitting somone with a horizontal force does nothing to influence the vertical force from gravity. The only exception would be if you caught them and aborbed some of that vertical force, slowing their vertical momentum. The strength required and the ensuing damage to your own body wouldn't be much different than if you were standing underneath them with your arms out.
Best case, on top of falling out of a tree, they have additional damage from being hit by a linebacker. Worst case, they land on top of you.
