I'm looking to purchase a 60-65' diesel bucket in the spring. Can you guys suggest some good truck dealers that sell quality used buckets, not Asplundh #### that is painted white and sold for $30,000. A solid truck and boom are my concern. Boom cert, di-electric test, dot inspection, oil analysis, etc.

Thanks in advance.

Theres a guy who has a couple decent ones here in ny just north of albany. 10-12K. Google upstate auto sales hoosick falls ny. thats where we got one of ours.

x aspundh's aen't bad dude. Get one that isnt sprayed white if it makes you feel better. The trucks coming right off of fleet have always been maitained, and safety/dialectric inspected. I ran mine all year, and it paid for itself in the first 2 months of work. So stop hatin' LOL......

But, if you feel that by paying an arm and a leg for what you want will get you better, than go right ahead ;-)

Where to find a good truck

Husky,
I believe I can help! I sent you a message, and I 'll look forward to talking with you.

Asplund Units

As for the Asplund units, they have been used and abused for years before they make it to auction. Their maintenance program is nonexistent. I have a good friend that has worked for Asplund for many years. He has personally noted chippers that have had 600-700 hours put on them before the first oil/filter change and aerial units that haven't been greased in over a year. If you saw the majority of there equipment before the "dealers" do the sheet metal and paint work, you would be horrified.

I believe you could say the same for many pre-owned units from smaller private companies too. As for the several Aplundh units that I looked over beore purchasing, some were better than others, but non were horrific, and they all passed current safety and di-electric tests. I paid $14500 for mine, and I'll be damned if you show be a better value for what I paid anywhere else.

My truck went into immediate service, and as far as the boom and hydros are concerned, I have had zero issues, as a matter of fact the unit just passed its second safety cert with no upkeep/replacing parts other than grease. The truck itself got new brakes and a clutch, but thats wear and tear stuff that just lets go after a while.

Don't make blanket statements about equipment procured from one area or another, that just makes you sound biased, uneducated, and frankly, just like a salesman. I know of the info I speak of from first hand experience, not some "friend who used to work for asplundh" so argue what you want, but I know.

I've seen joke units at joke prices, that I'd put my ####ty abused asplundh truck up against all week long. Bottom line is, most of all you salesman, find garbage whether it's from asplundh or whomever, shoot them with white paint, and call them something they aren't.

Ha Ha Ha! Nice one, Ducati. Was that a forestry unit or a rear mount?

Forestry, and the best investment I've made to date

I would love an under cdl rear mount with the same lift though..... Lets see how this Spring works out!

Naw, scratch that, I want a Gehl 140 first!

Well!

First of all, I'm not a salesman. Second of all I don't just speak from a "friends" input. I have been in this business for twenty years as a residential/commercial arborist and have bought and used many pieces of equipment from many different places. As a general rule there are better places to get equipment than from the average line clearance company.

Oh, also. My friend currently works for Asplund and has for over 20 years. I believe he has a pretty good perspective on his companies operations, its equipment life cycle projections, and equipment condition (as a general rule) prior to release/disposal.

SALESMAN!!

Just kidding..

I haven't been in the biz 20 years but I do know that unless you have a million dollar credit line, you can't limit yourself in anyway when procuring equipment. I try and educate myself to bring my knowledge to as high a level as I can before I purchase anything for my business, and it has saved me big. If I assumed that I needed to always stay away from certain types of equipment because of either where they came from, or their age, I'd be sitting here with an old 1-ton, and my nutz in my hand. All in all, you can get burnt buying anything used, and commercial equipment certainly isn't the exception. Just do your homework, and you should come out relatively unscathed, and with a whole lot more money left in your pocket..

Well, I don't have a million dollar credit line but since I've always stayed away from buying old "flintstone" trucks from Asplund, I've managed to save up a million dollars cash. No Really! I keep it in an aluminum briefcase with a little hand cuff attachment. Whenever I get ready to buy, I simply open the safe, pull out my little "porta-bank", and go a shoppin'

JUST KIDDING!!!

bucket truck

I buy my rigs from trueco equipment in north carolina. ask for butch trice. they buy a cab & chassis and then install the lift. i bought mine six years ago a '98 international 4900 with a '96 altec 60' lift. the truck is real work horse. they also sell new units. i bought a 2000 international 4700 with a brand new chip body and tool boxes. both units were painted my company colors. try trueco.com for contact info. or send me a pm and i will get you the phone #. good luck, jim

My flinstone truck paid for itself in 2 months, and made me enough money this summer to buy another nice chip truck and a log truck going into winter. I'd buy another flintstone truck in a heartbeat, assuming that it checked out like the first one I purchased.

How much did the two rigs cost individually? Whered they get the lift from, (if they even supply that information to you)

I have Barney Ruble and Fred Flintstone painted on my trucks, otherwise, I woulda been laughing my ass off. Was slightly ironic though....

Oops, watch the language. You know that might lead to a credit loss. I haven't really been paying attention to those, but I've been noticing the fluctuations. Hmm
