There's a small pocket of Stihl fanboys around that remind me of some mouth breathing UofM fans. You can't even finish a sentence without out getting "the effing Wolverines" shouted at you.
everyone that has run my 241 says "I want one of those" and these guys are "diehard" other brand saw runners. next on my list for @Jedslack would be and echo 490/590. great running saw for the price.

I didn't realize there were any other saws in this class! ;)
:rock2:

He's right.

That is a phenomenal price for that 6421 though. I would be surprised if your inbox isn't lighting up with strangers begging you to buy that and ship it to them on their dime.
Lowest price I have ever seen for a good running Makita 6421. It's too big for what OP wants. They sell these in Houston for that price? Where do you guys find these tantalizers?

I went on ahead and bought the 4300. Its a blue one! It looks pretty good, runs better, priced best at $173+ tax. I looked at the 6421...that thing is a beast. Way overkill for what I am wanting. I almost bought it anyways.

You made the right choice. In 15 years when the Mtronic is dead on all the 241's, just rebuild the carb and keep cutting. As a saw enthusiast sure the 241 is awesome, but it makes no sense for the normal person in the market for a small saw, it costs way too much. Not to mention I now have little faith in these new computer controlled saws, the manufactures just haven't implemented these systems properly IMHO.

Can you please point to where you bought your 4300? that seems like a great price.

*edit* I'm assuming it was used, from that same home depot, rather than a new saw? If it's a new saw at that price, please sign me up for a few.

You are correct. I bought it used at home depot. It is definitely not in "like new" condition, but it starts second pull every time so far. I asked for 10% off because of a small piece of damage to the case right near the chain. They gave me that with no questions asked. It came with the sheath, a sharp chain, and a black bar. I will probably slap a new bar on it at some point, but this one works fine for now.

Can I toss my Echo CS 490 into this mix? With a 16 BC it is well balanced, has a great anti vibration, plus plenty of power. It is simply fun to run. I ditched the safety chain and replaced it with Stihl RS.You should see the chips fly. I thought this saw should be included in this thread. Forgot to mention but it has a adjustable oiler, along with a rimed sprocket. It is Not a clamshell.Ken

OK I see the error of my ways. If you or I had a choice of the Two saws mentioned, which one wood you take?I would Stihl take my CS 490. Did I mention that it has a adjustable carburetor?

Well, I may have made a mistake buying used. I broke a piece of the oil cap loosening it with my bare fingers (very brittle). Then, the saw wasnt oiling worth a **** so I went to adjust it. Apparently a light turn of the screw driver has busted something there too. Now the adjustment screw turns and turns with no end without making any adjustment as far as I can tell. At least its oiling now. Only, the saw is now leaking bar oil when not in use. Any suggestions?

@fordf150 is a dealer who posts on here who is good to deal with and should be able to help you with parts, etc.

Yes, I missed out on that one. I am waiting for pics from another forum member. Home depot has the 4300 rentals for sale for $193 right now. Price just dropped to 193.
My personal pick will always be the one with the best service, or parts avilability...IN YOUR AREA. Nothing else matters for the occasional user as long as it can do the job you want. thats a good price for a makita, i would take it and run. yo can always throw a shorter more nimble bar on it.
