ok lets say that you cable/bolt it.
in the spring a big storm blows through and a half falls on the guys house.
who do you think the insurance company is going to go for?

I would offer to take it down but personally wouldn't cable it. Too much liability.

I took down what was left of a white pine almost identical to this one. Big wind storm came through and the tree snapped off right through where one of the bolts hade been placed. The guy who bolted and strapped the tree did a good job the but heavy straight line winds did her in. If you take it down rachet strap the living heck out of it. No matter what you do it will be a pucker fest until you get down past the crack. Good luck!

Thanks guys, I'll break the news to him today. I will only do a TD. This was my gut feeling and hopefully I'll get the work.

Tree looks good, alot of green. The crack seems older, not fresh.
Did you even look inside the crack? Shove a stick down there? Maybe drill/resistograph below to assess decay? Or even just tap with a hammer to see if it sounds hollow?

No?

Then what are you basing your decision on? Fear and loathing :chatter: from sawdustsite.com?? :spam:

If all you got are saws, all trees are is just wood.

"I'll break the news to him today. I will only do a TD"

Then he's gonna call around, and you will be out your time.

Oh well!

Well, I got the bid at 3k. I told him I'd work with him if the job went really well. But, He's going to pay for the risk. (risk = reward) I'll probably cut it on Tuesday . I'll get pics.

Thanks again fellas,

guy, cmon. this is a "big" eastern white pine. notorious for failing one way or the other. this thing got a mean crack 18 ft up. thats in the stem man. all you gotta do is tug on a branch and the thing'll snap.

you wanna hang onto this tree, i say you go up there and put your name on the job. that way when she goes over onto little susie on the swing set it'll be your tree hug that did it. (i wish that upon no one)

like i said earlier, while i might not have the years in the game as you, white pines within falling distance of a house is bad news. to me at least.

i'll agree with you on preservation most of the time but not on this one. if it was a dawn redwood then hell yes lets try to save it. most common tree round these parts coniferously is the white pine. i'm sure the HO will find another in the yard one day.

dont forget them ratchet straps and chain/binder LT!

I'm with you OD. There is quite a few evergreens in this hedge row. Hey, that sawdustsite.com is bogus. lol. I get it, it's beginning to smell like Christmas.

OD you mean like this close. This was a red pine but he had me also take 6 big white pine's after the top came out of one and landed on their house at about 2am. All trees were 70'+ and within 15 feet of the house. I am all for saving good healthy trees but sometimes its just a good idea to remove the hazzard before it becomes a disaster.

Cut IT Down

That picture is scary. I do not advise cabling and bracing in a situation where property could be damaged or lives lost. The home owner thinks the are buying safety, but all they are buying is time, and no one can say how much time.

i think the liberals here are smoking it too.

it will probably be a nationwide epidemic by Christmas.

i hear it originally came from Ontario.

that first pic the tree looks like its growing out the house. good job mic, looks like no damage. thanks for the pics.

edit: what are you going to recommend for planting around that house?

OD for now they are just going to work on growing a lawn, and if it makes anyone feel better The H/O milled all the white pines into lumber to finish some work on his cabin.

Sawdustsite.com. LOL!

Guy, if it makes you feel any better, this year I actually bought that big a$$ed 4' drill bit and have put it to good use to save an important tree for a customer. The tree had no targets other than another tree however.

Soo... I'm trying somewhat. In the old days I would have reccomended hacking that puppy right on down. lol

:agree2:

And regular professional care from you before little problems get big.

Thanks, the HO already has some smaller growth about 10' tall. you can see some leef in the pic. It might not look too bad after removal cause the others wisp into the WP. We'll see. I'll get some overall shots so every one can see.
