so i have been cutting lots of mesquite logs for fire wood and cooking and my saws with a semi chisel set up's cut faster then my saws with full chisel. why is this? semi has smaller teeth so wouldn't it cut slow and evacuate less chips?

I am not familiar with mesquite but we do have quite a variety of other timber here. I run a 440 with semi and a 441 with full chisel chain. If I cut something like Lophostemon confertus (brush box) then the semi outperforms the full. I suspect it is because the timber resists abrasion so well that the tooth cannot "settle" in and so the usual advantage of the full chisel is lost. On the other hand if I run the same saw and chain combos across something like Araucaria heterophylla (norfolk island pine) the full chisel rips big fat curly chips from the log and is much faster than the semi.

yeah that would make sense since the bigger teeth need more surface area to rip chips outta the kerf. like a knife(chisel) vs a razor(semi).

Chisel chain is 10 to 15% faster. Square ground chisel is faster yet.
A little chain info

Yes,

Something else is wrong with the chain if chisel is not faster then 'semi' , play with the DG heights for a start, your chisel may be just a little aggressive for your saw?

Another 'spariment' would be to fatten the mixture a tad, the more eggressive chain might do a little better with more fuel at the higher working pressures?

I can agree to a point. . . Full chisel has that point sticking out there, if it rounds out, you're dull.

Semi I would say scoops more than slices (like a gouging chisel). . . It dulls far less easily for sure. . . It's just not as "sharp", initially, as full chisel -- esp. square filed/ground.
