I noticed a small spill of hydraulic fluid under the wood splitter and thought maybe the pump was leaking.
I had added some prior to storage.
When I went to start it in warmer weather there was some that came out of the filler tube.
Probably a dumb question, but does the fluid expand quite a bit in warmer weather?
Also if the reservoir was nearly full is there enough turbulence in the tank when the ram is being cycled to cause it to come out of the spout?
I've run it for a couple of days with this not happening again.

Yes the oil will expand. It won’t expand because of the heat to the point of dumping one gallon on the ground. Did you fill when the ram was extended? There will be more oil in the tank when the ram is retracted then extended. And I’ve seen poorly designed breathers drip oil at the oil gets splashed up the filler hole.

Do you have a dip stick on your tank? That whould give safe levels for the oil. My Speeco has a dip stick and it shows min and max levels.

If you are working on uneven ground(not level) you will have hydraulic fluid leaking. Make sure your splitter is on level ground.
