There was some moron on CNN last month talking about alternative fuels that were ending up costing the rest of us a bunch of money because of lost revenue. To start, he mentioned biodiesel and how more people are turning to making fuel with commercially made units that utilize used cooking oil. In his estimation it was costing states millions of dollars every year because the fuel that is produced and used on the highways is not taxed. He proposed taxing the units that make the fuel, and make sure that the units be registered with the state that they are delivered too so that the applicable taxes could be collected. Then he moved on to solar and wind power generators, and then ended with our favorite, wood used for heating. He proposed the same thing, that you will be required to "register" your use of a woodburner for home use, and pay your applicable tax because as he put it, "it isnt fair for the rest of the taxpayers to carry the burden"
I know the day that this happens, I am putting my saws up.I sure aint going to pay a tax for the privelage of cutting my own wood.

How dare you call B.Obama a moron! No, seriously, this is what we are up against. The goverment must be fed first and foremost, and you had better not stand in the way of their slop.Next time you hear about raising taxes on "the rich" substitute in the words "the woodburner" The rich will do what the woodburner will do...hide his wood or quit cutting. Come on,Avalancher, don't you want to be FAIR? Oh, and about your sig line; was she referring to looking at herself in the mirror each morning?

Nope, I have no desire to be "fair" when it comes to more taxes on the guys who put their backs to the load and push all day. The way I figure it, making your own fuel to burn, drive on the road, etc is just another way of evening up the odds against us. It wouldnt bother me a bit to pay 1.65 in tax per gallon of fuel if I saw the roads maintained with the dollars instead of supplying our local government officials with lavish freebies. Our local Head of Transportation official got busted last year for taking 3 WEEKS to go to a conference in Miami to the tune of $8100.
If you look at the very nuts and bolts of the thing, if you make your own fuel out of components that have already been taxed, then the fuel has already been taxed. Its like paying taxes on buying a used car!We all have to pay it, but for crying out loud, the "tax" has already been paid on the vehicle, sometimes many times over as it went from one owner to the next. Then when you take the vehicle to the car smasher for recycling, they charge you a "disposal" tax on the thing. Then you pay an income tax on the money you make from it. On an on it goes.

I believe she was talking about an American in general. How our country is really compiled of people willing to take a risk to get ahead, and how fear inspires wisdom.
At least that was when she was around I guess.

One of the quirkier things about NH is that all state gas tax revenue MUST go toward the maintenence of the roads. It's written into the state constitution as an amendment. Weird place for something this specific, but it makes those funds off limits for anything else.

Well then, that is an excellent idea! Apply the tax as it should.Sadly, here in TN they can and do move funds all over the place. We have a state lottery that is supposed to fund the schools. first it was designed to fund scholarships to college, then any excess funds were to go to local schools. The state revealed last year they had an "excess" and didnt know what to do with all the cash. Someone suggested funds should go out to more schools, they decided to build a newer stadium and some more buildings for the University of TN. Meanwhile, my wife is a middle school teacher, and this year she had her budget axed for paper and books. She has to buy all her own paper beyond an allotment that basically funds about half of what she needs. And her school got NO new books this year.
Nuts, plain and simple.

Bunch of liberals in Tenn. ;)

Truth be told, the folks in Concord have been trying to expand the criteria for what gas tax $$$ can be applied to but it wouldn't make it through the courts.

I always wondered why you get taxed more for making your property look good. You should get taxed more if your property looks like a pig pen. Our countryside would sure look a lot better and we wouldn't have to pay the freight for the slobs.

I've been in NY only once as an adult. Coming from a state with no sales or income tax, I was shocked at the point of sale when I was charged a state tax (expected) and a county tax.

In NH counties are pretty much meaningless unless you go to jail or are in the county nursinghome. Maybe they're more robust political entities in NY. I hope you're at least getting something for your county tax.

If "They" are gonna try to tax my wood pile, I'd hope "They" are wearing flack gear!!! This crap is waaaaay outta hand and it is gonna lead to...Aaaah...BAD!:angry2:

Folks who cut and split should get a tax credit for all the hard work they are doing, because it fights obesity.
