Heck, I use my vise. I can get three cutters up at a time on a 4" or 4 1/2" vise and can get through a 42" loop in pretty short order. A 24" loop in about 1/2 that time..:D

Got no vise, and no where to put one right now if I did have one!

Hey SW,
What about a old saw vice. Adjustable and uses a snap over clamp. The local shop uses one. His is about a foot long. Most I have run across are 8 to 10 inchs. Here is a pic of what I am talking about. When I ge tmy bench set up good there will be one on mine for hand filing.

Thats neat! But with the angle iron I can clamp and hang on the wall, space is at a premium right now!!

Hey madsaw, Ive got one of them!

It was left in our house when we moved in and it works great!

Ive even tried to make something similar for use in a vice but keep going back to the old one, just plain works good.

Here is the one you need SW,
But it ove rin teh UK. Just make a away to clamp it to something on the wall and take it down when not needed. I clamp mine on the side of the bench and put it under it when I am done.

I followed some advice given to me, and used a wore out bar in .050 .325 and welded a piece of angle iron on it to clamp to the bench to file with. I works very well!!!
Problem, all of my 3/8's bars are too nice/new and I don't want to do this to them!!! Anybody have a wore out 3/8" .063 bar, 16"-20" preffered but I can cut it down, that they would be willing to pack and ship? I am more than happy to pay shipping/time. Any takers? I know most run .050, but all I can do is ask!
Thanks,
Andy

Just clamp the bar in a vice, with the powerhead still attached, apply some extra chain tension, and you are ready to go.......

My vise is padded, to not mess up the paint on the bars.....

sawinredneck, sometimes it's so easy to make it difficult

I was going to reply saying I have ore than one chain for each saw, and can't see the point in changing the chain eight times to sharpen it on the powerhead. I was also going to say that space in my grgage is at a huge premium, so much so my air compressor is stored under my welding bench (it's gas powered) right now. And add that I havent the room for a vise, much less room under a workbench for a vise right now, if I did own one. I could also go on that it's very easy to hang a bar with a peice of angel iron welded on it on the wall to get it out of the way, and a setup like that works really well for what I am trying to do.

Then it hit me, that I already had said these things before!

Funny, I was going to ask the mooch question too...

Went to my dealer today to pick up my double-dog chain catcher and big studs and was going to mooch an old bar off him for this.

Bugger decided to clean his shop.

He had 5 gallon buckets full of old bars and others with old chains - running down the length of one wall.. I was going to ask for some old chains for grinder practice too... :bang: :bang: :bang:

Anyway... looking for a dead bar to make into a sharpening jig - .050 groove. Shipping gladly covered...

You got a gas powered bench? Nice!

Should have seen that comming!! Nice catch!!! No, my gas powered aircompressor is stored unde my welding bench, I don't think I will be doing much welding on that bench for a while!!

I only meant that you asked a very simple question and it turns into (you should do this and you should do that ) not just a simple yes I have one that you can have.
