Well I sit here thinking that my 460 did an excellent job with a 32" bar on the cotton wood tree I had to take down in my yard. The only problem is, the 32" barely reached, and there are trees that are just as rotten that a 32" bar won't handle.

I could go ape-uh, crap and buy a bigger saw, but I really would rather not... (BELIEVE IT!:ices_rofl: ) so I need to probably step up to a 36" bar, maybe bigger (but I think the next step is a 42" bar, and thats a big step)

Is it feasible to make the 460 drive a 36" bar with a BB kit and some port work, or is one honestly better served with a larger saw?

460's out here see 36" bars all the time... Most of them only have the factory dual port muffler. Some guys will get them "woods ported".

That saw should handle it.

+1

Just try the DP muffler.. You don't need BB.. and from what I read here, it's not clear it does much unless it's modded anyhow.. and for the price of a BB on top of what you have in your 460, plus the mod, you CAN buy a bigger saw.

Hmm, thanks for the reply.

Im curious, does anyone have any idea on how much power a saw loses when it climbs to higher alititude? I'm a mile higher than where my saw came from, (At 6,000 ft and higher).

Edit:

Im running the dual port muffler now. It runs the 32" bar okay... If I was going to opt for a BB kit, I'd probably send it off to a builder and get some work done on it. Like a Stage II for example...

Still doing my homework on Mods and Stages and what not.

Well its been a month since I've spent money on chainsaws:greenchainsaw:

Maybe I need to send it off ::monkey:

I had a project/rebuild 046 that I put Baileys BB kit on. Never actually got a chance to use it, but the guy I sold it to said it handles a 36" bar no issues.

I wouldnt think a stock 460 would hesitate in cottonwood with a 36".

Agreed. In rotten cottonwood, no problem. Umm... I don't have specific experience with this, but the word on the street is that when ported, the big bores don't do as well at high elevations as a ported stock top end will. Seein's how you're up at 6000, according to what I've heard, you'd do better with a modded stock setup. I'd buy the bar first, then see how it does.

I run a 36" 3/8 full comp on mine in poplar. no problems at all pulling it. stock with DP muffler

460

36in, hmm, it should handle it in cottonwood and softwood, but it won't in oak with out some modding. But what the heck, you can always use a 660:rock: for the big bars and put a 24 or less on the 460 and bring the real power out. My 440/460 wear 20" bars. But of course, I don't have any 7 ft cotton woods here. We do have some big oaks and poplars though. But I would say if you are going to use a 36 all the time, I would get a 660. And of course, you don't need to get a new one, if you look around you can find a good used one. But if you are going to use the 36 on the 460, you need to keep the chain RAZOR SHARP.:)

Thanks tek9tim for that bit about elevation...

... that could save me some good $$$

Not as high as you, but I can vouch for the elevation. My stock P&C kits modded the same blow the doors off my BBs.
Night and day.
IMo- BBs are Overrated. Give me time and I will post a video to prove it.

Well, as I have run both stock and modded now, I have a better idea, with a 25" there isn't much difference between them, mine was a hair faster, running fat mind you, with the BB ported, than the stock. I have buried my 32" in hedge, and I dont think I would be afraid to bury a stock 460 36" in Cottonwood. I DON'T think I would try and run a 32" or larger on a stock one in hardwood!!!
Seriously, try it, I think it will pull it fine in the softwood, I think you will be unhappy in hard wood though.

You Sold The 460????:(

Since the 660 came home with me, the 460 has sat and collected dust. I mean literally, in my living room with dust on it. I did run it once, the week before I sold it....because it hadn't been run in over a year.

And I needed to buy another one of these, and when my fly reels cost me $650, the $$$ came in handy.

You can do a lot with tweeking the DG's and a full skip chain to keep the speed up, but there is no replacment for displacment!

For more of a joke, i posted a clip awhile back "Dose this saw sound sick?". with a 36" bar on an MS-310, I needed to drop about a dozen 36" DBH Ponderosia's just west of Denver, at about 8000' , before I had a saw more suitable.

With only about .015 at the DG's and a razor edge to some RSLKF , it got by!

Solid Cottonwood dose have some grain to it, you should get you a new 660 however!
