LOL! Good times for the boys. And yep so true, college took out a lot of horse sense. People relied on book smarts to long. Sad but true most at the unemployement line are way more educated than me.

Don't ever think that Norm, there are all kinds of education out there. I went to college for criminal justice and just couldn't handle more school, I went for 2.5 years and learned nothing that has served me to this day. What I have learned out in the field is what puts food on my table.

The degree gets you the job, then you learn how to do it with on the job training, lol.

Funny how that works, and you are 100% right, I have had some real young guys who are going to school to be HVAC techs intern with me over the last summer and after two years of BOCES and a full year of tech school under their belt, neither one of them knew which side of a refrigeration system the gauge hoses go on. It's not their fault, they are both pretty sharp kids, it's that they are not being taught. I am glad that in my trade as long as you have an EPA license to do refrigeration work, you can get a job pretty quickly. You may not last long if you can't learn it but a lot of employers are willing to give you a chance if you want to learn.

Im about to graduate college, after a loooonnnnggg college career. long story short, all the skills that ive relied on to find jobs in the past, and the skills ill use to find a job after graduating, i gained from real world experience, and my father. I owe everything i know to him and all the other men that took the time to teach me their trade. I know machining, welding, plumbing, carpentry, and so many other things, not from a book but from standing in a veterans shoes and listening and learning. Its taken time to learn everything i know, and im always trying to keep my mouth shut and ears open! It is so great to see Diggers dad taking the time to do what my dad did for me. Digger and Max will thank you one day.

Ain't that the truth. Of the people I know who worked for and attained their 4 year degree in Criminal Justice, only one works as a lawman. He says he learned virtually nothing in those 4 years to help with the real world challenges of the job. I think they should start with people skills - things like "Treat people the way you would want your sister or wife treated, until they won't let you be nice anymore."

Having much of the same experience and skill base as you, I'll take your compliment as high praise. Thank you!

Good thread, I read it all the way through. That is what a good father does, sorry to say not all are that kind of father myself included. Tom

I'm glad you enjoyed it. The thread really grew because of all the responses from members on here, their generosity, and their encouragement. I was just going to put up a couple of pictures of a neat story. I am grateful to everyone for making it such a positive experience for Digger, Max and me.

You can't stop now! :hmm3grin2orange: This is great thread! :msp_thumbsup:

Let us know when he needs another project! :hmm3grin2orange:

We still have the one from Jon, Digger started cleaning on it a little tonight. Another member has offered him one but I feel kinda bad with him getting all the free saws. Folks won't even let me pay shipping on 'em. On top of that, none of them are bad saws. The ones Chainsaw Mike sent were all good units, just needed a little TLC. Same with yours and I suspect with Jon's. I could understand it if they were basket cases like I get!

I guess I'll shoot a PM and see if the offer is still open on the latest one. I may have to build more shelves.

That one I sent was a box saw! LOL Nothing easy about that one!

And here we go.....

Great story. Thanks for sharing it. My teenage daughter and I just read through the whole thing. We've talked about teaching her how to handle a saw and I think it's time to start (carefully!).

Thanks again

John, thanks again.

It was great, really. We had to find a bar and chain, so he learned a little about different bars and chains for different saws; putting it together to make a decision on what it needed to run, that's troubleshooting; when it was all together and running the oiler was bad so we brushed up on tear-down and reading the IPL. Then he had to SEE why the oiler wouldn't work and find a replacement out of the two or three different styles available. A little bit of new added to the old.

A pretty decent saw, too! He has it proudly displayed on "his" saw section of the shelf.

Guess I should have looked at that oil pump better? LOL I could have sent a good one!

Thanks for reading it! Digger isn't quite big enough to handle one yet. I told him a good point to begin would be when he was able to start one by himself. He has been through every saw in my line-up trying to find one he can pull...actually got close on a Dolmar.

I hope you and daughter enjoy it as much (and more) than Digger and I have.

Marc

You would have had to tear the saw down to find it. It looked like it was packed with sawdust. The whole thing was jammed and wouldn't turn even when I REALLY tried to make it turn. That may have been why the saw was tossed - burned up a bar and then got another saw. It worked out great for us!

Another project on the way!

Mike (road2damascus) has been kind enough to offer another project for Digger. He made the offer several weeks ago and I didn't know if he would still have it; he did and said it was Digger's if he wanted it.

Looks like we'll be working on a Mac before too long. I've never been into one, should be fun for us both.

A big "thank you!" to Mike!

A Mini-Mac ! I hope NOT !! :hmm3grin2orange: He will never want to work on a saw again!
