Can't you just pull the flywheel?
Did you pull the muffler?

If it's off a small amount, it will be hard for you to tell exactly what's going on. Do you have a 3/8 impact gun?

Here's mine at TDC (as close as I could get it). You probably won't catch a few degrees off with your eyes, but if it's off by a lot I hope I could help.

Thank you. Great pic! I'll give that a try, tomorrow. Busy day, today!

Thank you. Yes, have an impact gun. Just need to find some time! Found these instructions on removing muffler: "Nothing but three screws and the muffler screws. Take the two screws out of the bottom of the saw, the ones that hold the tank to the case. Take the one screw out of the plastic covers on the side of the saw just below the clutch. The two muffler bolts are accessed through holes in the bottom of the tank. It's a 5 minute job, max." Copy?

Basically yes, it's going to a bit tight but is doable. There is a metal gasket in there also. I would do the easier flywheel removal first. I take the whole handle assembly off when I do it, but the way you described will get you access to see the piston.
