The saw still has all the paint on the bar, no marks on the piston with the muffler off.

It appears the person had tried to adjust the saw for more power didn't have enough power for them.

This is just a back-up/small wood saw for my 357xp. Yup it's a Poulan but for $80 if it gives me any trouble I can throw it away.

Would it do any good to open the muffler up on this one?

I have a 141 which I put together from a few saws.
It is indeed a Poulan, but is the saw I use for junk stuff. It is a lot lighter than my other saws and is great for small stuff. I modded 2 types of mufflers for this saw. The first was a cat. cnvtr. which I drilled 3 small holes in the front of the muffler. I then cut out the front mount plate and stuck a screen in between. It ran WAY better but still trapped to much heat for my taste. I then bought a stock 141 muffler and all I did was pry that nickel sized stock slot open to about 3/8 across at the widest point. This mod also made a huge difference and runs way cooler than the modded cat cnvtr muffler. The saw runs great but is what it is...
For 80.00 grab it!!!

well once I cleaned up the saw and tuned it properly so that it wasn't so LEAN it runs really good. It also throws oil like a stuck pig. It only has a 16" bar but I'm sure it would oil a larger bar just fine for easy cutting I.E. mostly pine here in the Northwest.

This thing was a ticking time bomb but once I richened up the high side it seems it will cut just fine will 4 stroke just a bit at full throttle. It took 1/2 to 3/4 turn on the high side to get it there!!!

It has a six tooth sprocket on it 3/8 I am thinking of changing it over to .325 since I already have some chain and another bar that will work.

I guess I should thank all of you on Arboristsite that have contributed because of you I have a 357xp that has been tuned correctly and I know how to check it. I also have a nice little 141 that I was able to tune so that I should last a good long time with proper maintenance.

Max, "cat. cnvtr. which I drilled 3 small holes in the front of the muffler. I then cut out the front mount plate and stuck a screen in between" ?? Does your 141 have an adjustable carb? Mine has the little pins for H and L and starts fine on choke but will not keep running when cold, even on high idle. When warmed up it cuts with pretty good power...but what a pain. How do you adjust this carb? I think it needs a half turn or so open on the low jet, then maybe some muffler work.

Kodiakfisher, I agree that we have to give many thanks to the folks on this site for the advice :) . Even the "bloodletting" posts are interesting and I learn alot.

Scott, Stupid answer on my part...I just looked and jet screws do have tiny serrations. Thanks Scott...Phil.

I think I know what youre talking about on the adjuster screws, others I have heard of have used a piece of rubber, or plastic tubing to adjust the screws.

My carb came off a trashed 1999 141. I pulled the limiter caps off and the h & l jets were slotted. I can adjust them with a small flat screwdriver.
My 141 also runs poorly until it is up to temp. I just stand there and nudge it along for a minute or so until it is warmed up.

My 357xp has the pin type jets. These are really small but are still slotted.
I can't adjust the 357 by myself due to the pins/slots being so small.
I needed someone to help me hold the saw when I adjusted that one.
It is fully adjustable, just a pain in the arse to get the screwdrive to stay in the slot.

I just gently used a pair of long needle nose pliers to adjust the jets on the carb. I had initially thought that because it was bogging off idle the low speed jet needed to be adjusted but once I adjusted the H side everything was perfect.

I remember the good folks on AS saying Poulan saws come real lean so they burn up and you have to buy a new one.

Thanks!

I made a tool from an ink pen body. Opened up both the L and H jets, then adjusted the idle...wow what a difference! It is getting dark so I only waited half an hour before I retested. The 141 (with green fuel cap) popped on the first pull, started on the third with choke fully off on high idle and accelerated from there. No more nursing along to warm up.

I'll try it from dead cold next weekend. I can't thank you guys enough...Phil

The cat cnvtr muffler I first used had the exhaust on the left rear if looking straight down. The exhaust was guided out the right side by way of a funky shield. The exhaust opening on the cat cnvtr muffler had an opening no larger than a pencil eraser. No joke, it was tiny and real restrictive!!!
This muffler is silver color.

The non-cat, open can type is black and has the exhaust opening on the right side of the muffler dumping it over the chain.

No problem.
I will try and get some photos tomorrow before work, but that depends on how easy it is to get the kids off to school.
