I don't believe my luck!

I have been torn on which saw to buy b/c all I have ever known is cheap $120 Puolans... It's been back and fourth for those that don't know 346xp, 260pro, 361, 028, 041, 6401 etc...

Well on a last ditch effort i searched www.crazedlist.org For those of you who don't know you can search as many craigslist areas as you want at once... you don't have to back up to go to the next city to look for stuff... You need firefox/modzilla though...

Anyhow, wouldn't you know I found a 6401 for $100! To good to be true right... LOL... I went over as soon as I saw it this morning! The guy says he bought it at a auction for $100 but can't get it started. To be honest this guy is a desk jocky and knows nothing about DIY stuff at all... He just wanted it to do "cleanup" in the back yard (1/8 acre town lot)... : Ha Ha sucker... I knew i had him right where i wanted him...

So, I looked it over good and did a compression check (perfect!), a tiny bit of saw dust on it... bar looks brand new, chain looks new... The drive sprocket shows ZERO wear and it looks absolutly brand spanking new! Well talking to the guy I found out belonged to a older guy who bought it, ran it for a couple hours on 2 trees, and then put it away never draining the origional gas... The seller said he hadn't put fresh gas in... At this point i'm thinking this guy is such a clown!:jester:

Anyway, onto the deal... I hummed and hawwed over it a while. It didn't start so i fugure a carb kit will cost me $30 right... I looked the guy square in the eye and told him since it needs a carb kit I would give him $50 for it... He said "I can't loose that much on it, my wife will laugh at me!" We met in the middle at $75 and I ran like the wind with IT! Can you believe it! The only bad part was having to drive 75 miles to get it this morning... To add on top of the whole deal I found out that my Grasshopper dealer (I have a 727K...) sells and services Dolmar!

Well I just go back to the computer 10 mins ago and had to share this awesome find!

Next questions...

1.) Are the $68 air filter kits worth it?

2.) What parts will i need if any to fix the gummed up carb from the old gas? (part numbers would be helpful...)

3.) If i got the 79cc kit does anyone on here do porting?

I wouldn't necissarily call the man a "clown". We all gotta start somewhere.
On the other hand though, it seems like you got a good deal. Do you have any pics?

Before you throw a carb kit on there, clean it out and try to fire it up!

Only if you really need it!

Since it is your first decent saw, focus on getting it in running order, wait with thoughts about upgrades until later.....

pics to come... I just got it this morning! I am giddy with anticipation to fix it and run it! I actually took 2 hrs off work this morning to go get it and had to go back... The guy didn't post pics on the CL add...

As far as the clown comment: You had to be there and talk to the guy. Complete white collar, drives a BMW and Mercedes, lives in a $750K house, in a gated community... Basically a big dollar guy who was more concerned with saving face with his wife than getting what the saw was worth... What he was doing at a auction... I couldn't even begin to guess and really could care less!

Good point... Any thoughs on what parts I will need? Do they make a carb rebuild kit? It seems like Dolmar sells all the carb parts seperate...????

I'm a white collar clown but I'm handy with a wrench too. You can't always judge by appearances. In the summer I drive a Porsche and if you saw me you'd probably assume I was a "big dollar clown" too. In the winter and for outdoor adventures I drive a lifted Sierra. You'd probably think I was a good ole boy. Fact is I'm a little of both.

I bet that "clown" is damn good at what he does, judging by his success, and if you had to do his job you'd be lost. Some guys are good with their hands, some guys can convince the Board of Directors to fund their multimillion dollar project. That doesn't make one better than the other. Good for him for at least being willing to get his hands dirty and try something he might not be familiar with. My grandpa taught me how to live off the land, and his taught him to be a businessmaaaaann lol.

I just want to know where the auction for $100.00 saws is.

Either a Zama or Walbro carb. kit will set you back about 15$ Might find a new carb is worth the extra money, most range in the 40$-75$ range.

I ran my Dolmar 7900 with the stock air filter without issue, but I never got it into super dusty conditions.

Realistically if you're just looking to run a 20" or less 64cc will offer plenty of power.

As SawTroll said worry about get it running well first then worry about up grades. No reason to upgrade a saw that doesn't run worth a damn.

The guy sounds like a real "clown," a "clown" with some serious money.

So he went to an auction and thought that he'd buy a chainsaw. He did for $100.00, only to find out he didn't know much about chainsaws, so he sold the chainsaw at a huge $25.00 loss. He didn't want to lose face with his wife, everybody knows that only "clowns" try not to appear foolish to their wives. Oh yeah, he's definately a real "clown."

Like I said I guess you had to be there... Trust me he had zero good ol' boy in him. The part that was really off putting was the fact his hands were softer than my fiances' and he had the "limp noodle" hand shake... I am sure he is good at what he does... But he seemed like one of those guys that will over pay for something to get done so he doesn't have to lift a finger... I mean come on guys... I know you all have walked away from another guy at one point or another and thought... "What a dummy"... He didn't have much common sense and didn't seem to be the sharpest tool in the shed...

I realize you are all hating on me right now and I'm not trying to be a jerk, but I know you have all thought these things before whether you want to admit it or not. Maybe I'm over compensating and maybe my perceptions are skewed and maybe I'm just a little to "old school." But I guess in my mind making loads of money and driving super nice cars don't make you a man.

Setting a good example for your kids.
Standing up for people who can't stand up for themselves.
Doing something yourself instead of paying to have it done.

Thanks for all the help. I called the Dolmar dealer and he should have the parts in by tues and I should have it running by wed/thurs next week... I'll be taking the saw straight to field trials... I have 3 cords of standing stems waiting to be felled.

I think the only important thing here is that you got a whale of a deal on an excellent, virtually unused pro-quality saw. I'll drink a toast in honor of your success tonight (Laphroaig quarter cask) while forgetting the petty "clown" type stuff, and may you enjoy many, many years of great cutting with that saw.

I also agree that you should just drain out all the old stuff and put in fresh mix and see if you can get it to go. Maybe you need a carb kit, maybe you don't. Doesn't make sense to me to assume you need the more complicated procedure. Often enough, it's the most basic "fix" that takes.

I just gotta ask after reading this are you a politician?
If you will read above you said stand up for those who can't stand up for themselves! Then instead of standing up and telling the man who knew nothing about chainsaws what he had you tried to lowball him. I honestly don't get it. I would not be able to sleep tonight if I were in your shoes. Sure you got a great deal and you had him right where you wanted him didn't you. Just curious if this would have been a little old lady selling her late husbands stuff so she could eat would you have handled it any different or would she too have been right where you wanted her?

Next time try this approach when something is undervalued from the start. Nice saw probably needs a little TLC I am kinda handy with them. I see you got it priced at $100 that is a good price I will take it since that is what you priced it for. You do realize these sell new for $500 plus so if I get it going it is quite a saw for the money! Hand over $100 bill! If he accepts you can rest easy and you still got a deal! If not you can sleep even easier knowing you did the right thing and he was not a man of his word anyway! Any man worth his salt will sell it for what he is asking even at a loss.

Not meant to offend just the dialogue of the conversation you reported just rubs me like hearing a politician talk! Good ol boy or trust fund kid I would still sleep easier knowing I done what was right and even though that $25 did not mean a thing to him.
