This 025 is giving me fits. I'm on my second fleabay ignition, both were advertised as coming from a running saw. The first one I figured I got taken, but now that No. 2 is ignoring me I think I must be doing something wrong. The saw came to me with NO ignition so I didn't have a model, but it seems to me there's only one way to hook it all up. Does this setup look correct to you fellas?

If you leave the small wires off, the ignition should fire with every revolution of the flywheel, as the wires are just there for the kill switch circuit.
Start from the begining, and tell us what the trouble is...............
 
Thanks for the help, gents... I think I'll do just that, go out to the shop this eve and disconnect the quickstop wiring. With regards to the first comment, I think there may be two styles of coil for this series of saw. I THINK that this particular coil has the ground wire hardwired into the coil. I BELIEVE the the black wire sticking out of the aft end (tank handle end) is the ground wire, which is why I have routed it to the block. The other coil I had was not equipped with the black "ground" wire, it had a separate (i.e., not part of the harness) wire. That wire I routed from the coil bolt to the block. As you can see, it is not present on this setup.
 
The ground wire just needs to see ground, shouldnt matter where.




Is that kill switch wire touching the choke lever in the second pic? I ask this due to having to "fix" a friends saw that wouldht fire, that stinkin wire was out of placeand touching the choke lincage when it was in a certain position. (choke on?)


This caused much confusion but was a simple fix.

Wow, I'm impressed, you guys have good eyes! The kill switch wire seems ok, the angle of the photo just makes it look like it touches. I disconnected all the wires but the plug wire and tried it.... no go. Tomorrow I think I'll uninstall the unit and look the plug wire over carefully for breaks... maybe its grounding out behind the unit or something. I'm beginning to think I'm screwed on coil no 2!
 
Do you have access to a multimeter? If so, check DC resistance between any wires you have as well as any metal parts on the ignition unit. Post the results. For a unit not to work at all something will usually be open circuit - more than 20,000 Ohms, or short - 2 Ohms or less. Also check both of your units have similar readings.

Just one question, how are you checking for spark, it is not that easy on saws with a lot of plastic?

just leave the plug laying on top of cylinder should work, atleast on mopeds it does...
 
Funny that you should mention that, as I have a 141 that I thought was going to need a coil because I felt a very weak spark but the thing ended up running like a champ. To check for spark, I usually have my wife hold the plug wire and then I pull away. Naw, just kidding. I do actually FEEL for spark, though, because that seems a bit more sure fire than seeing it. I either put a screwdriver into the plug wire hole, hold onto it and pull or I remove the plug, and hang onto it and pull. The latter is easier since I take compresson out of the equations. It is very primitive but it has always worked well.
 
Get a big battery clip and CLIP the body of the plug to the cylinder for testing. Also, bend up the center electrode for a really wide gap - that simulates the correct voltage for firing under cylinder pressure.



You going to install a tank vent?

The "clip the battery to the cylinder and make the gap bigger" were solid ideas but produced no results. Looks like I need to find myself a multimeter, eh? This little fella goes back on the shelf for a bit. Are 025s known for losing coils, perchance?
 
This would be a one in 10,000 of it happening, check your flywheel to make sure the magnets are strong and not weak. It can happen though not often.

Boy are YOU guys gonna be mad! The wife says, "Could the plug be bad?" My answer is "Nah, I've NEVER had a bad NGK plug!" Just for kicks I swapped it out. Nice blue spark. Go ahead, have at me, I deserve it!

The wife is pretty happy with all the tools I just gave her.

Your wife already has.. Glad it is fixed.. They sell a spark tester with a clip. you can set the gap too..
