Hello all!

I have a project 034 that I am working on, and need a little help.

I have fuel, spark, and compression. (enough to sometimes pull the starter from my hands.)

I removed the carb and cleaned it and reassembled according to the service manual and ipl.

I get an occasional bark.

The muffler is a 2 piece design, side hole with screen, (purchased from ebay) the top 2 bolts fit, but the bottow ones dont line up. no type of baffle, just a big open box.
The carb screws are seated, the turned out 1 full turn.
Spark seems healthy.

any help would be appreciated!

Thanks
Dan

Hi, Dan! You mentioned CLEANING the carb but not rebuidling the carb. This is a bit hard to diagnose without a little more info. Try putting some raw mix into the carburetor throat (tip the saw a bit so it drains towards the cylinder) and try starting it. If the saw pipes up and runs for a few seconds then you have a basic fuel delivery problem. Check the integrity of the fuel line and if that looks ok, rebuild the carb. It's cheap, easy, and makes all the difference in the world. I'm not a Stihl guy, but if your saw has an impluse line, you'll need to check/change that too, also an easy job. If your saw doesn't pipe up with fuel in the carb, you will need to do some more technical tests (compression leakdown, timing, etc.) Have fun, take your time, you'll get it!

The muffler you have is from an 036, and may not fit the 034 (there are several variations)... but that's not your current problem.

Check all the obvious, but you really need to pressure and vacuum test the saw if nothing jumps out at you. Flywheel side crank seal is a relatively common failure item in an older 34.

I agree with Andre put some fuel mix about 1/2 to 1 teaspoon into the carb throat pull the cord and see what happens. Keep your finger on the kill switch if it does fire it will likely run wide open until the fuel is gone and you'll want to shut it down pretty quick. If it fires and runs I would check things like the impulse line, fuel line, tank vent, and fuel filter first (cheap and easy) before rebuilding the carb. If the saw wont run after priming the carb I would check the coil gap first and check the wires for cracks or breaks before replacing the coil. I always try to eliminate all of the easy and free stuff first before I start tearing things apart and spending money. I know it sounds stupid but did you put a new plug in it?? I've seen guys spend 200.00 on parts and go crazy trying to figure out why the saw wont run all because they forgot about the 2.00 plug. Just a few things to check let us what you find.

Thanks for the help!

I did change the plug, and fuel is getting to the cylinder. I am getting some vapor in the muffler. The muffler has a good seal (even with the 2 bolts).

The other issue is the starter, I replaced the starter dawgs, I don't think that I winded the starter enough. The starter has a relativity short throw.

I will keep trying, anc keep ya'll updated

Dan
