sorry bud i have no PPE besides a hard hat. It is hard to take photos of yourself climbing! Believe it or not i have been climbing with that 044 witha 20 inch bar on it. I would appreciate it if you got your rocks off by doing somthing else than being a smart guy with me. I have seen enough of that around here! I am just showin you all some og my stuff, god dam!

here is somthing for everyone. That "unstable" notch was cut 3 days befor i fell it. It had no problem hanging on for that period of time. The reason that it was cut so deep was to actually get some good hinge wood,(look at the pic of me). I also cutit that deep to correct for the slight l lean. Hasent anyone ever cut a deep notch in a tree that looked like it wanted to go the other way? A good example is in the photo album on madsens site. Even though the guy smashed his new truck because it barberd, it works most of the time. I will get thoes skeptics some climbing pics if the next tree I am doing.

COTTONWOODS GROW IN THIS PART OF OREGON!!

sorry kid. im just givin you grief from the other post you had .. you know which one.. but im done now. just be safe at what you do . For me when a tree has a lean i want to compensate for i use a wedge. one more thing . you should add some safty glasses to your list of ppe if nothing else. they are so much cheaper then new eyes.

I'm sorry I did not come across clear. Its not a degradable error, it a safety one. Root pull and slabbing are hazards that can cause faller safety issues. Ive had root pulls come up off the side of a tree and just about nut me before. Thats all.
Smokechaser,A guy on lower MI got killed by something simular to a root pull. The tree he was falling was covered with vines. He must have not nipped them all off because when he fell the tree one of the roots pulled out of the ground and layed him open from the crotch to the chest. He died within minutes. The reason I brought this up was your mention of root pull. I have never seen this happen, but its now something I will be looking out for.
O56, Your playing with fire. Get some PPE and Douglas Dents book before you seriously hurt yourself.

Well, where to start. I guess with the older folks first. Root pull is species speies related to a degree and is really only an issue when the sap is running which is why they are called sap cuts. the proper place to do them is down several inches from the corners, that way u havent compromised your corners. The childs cuts look very level, the face is maybe a little narrow, but if youre cutting timber all day youll get more trees on the ground with as narrow a face as practical (less cutting). It is a little deep there boy, you can go to half dia. passing that is a sketchy game. Why not stick with the fundamentals, make level cuts, match corners, use wedges and then start playing shame games. :blob5:

Ben,
root pull is a bit@# cause you never can tell when it will happen. I agree that the kid could learn from the Dent book too.

056kid,
The goggles your talken about are called bugz. they come in two screen gauges. they work good for wet conditions or if your a sweaty betty.
some folks like em some dont. I think some of the wildland fire catalogs may still sell them

Or we could really create a hazard and e could take an Arbormaster course on tree falling. hA, hahahahahaha hehehehehehehehehehehe wooooohooo. :umpkin:

056Kid-Bugz or bugeye goggles maybe obtained through Bailey's; see the top of this page. I use them daily and like them on anything except punky deadwood. You said on another thread that you are not opposed to new ideas--that's great. The pictures that woodshop posted for you give a lot of us the impression that you are "playing around" with trees and saws. Everyone starts somewhere. I was 22 yrs. old when I first used a chainsaw and I didn't know what a choke was or how to get the darned thing started. There were a bunch of other guys watching me, waiting for me to scroo up. Luckily, a buddy of mine helped me when no one was looking. You look a bit younger than me when I started and I understand you've been running saws for a while. Have you ever thought about trying to work for the forest service(yes I read about your troubles with them)? I learned a lot fighting fires with the forest service about running saws and falling trees. It is a great way to learn and you have lived until you've fallen a burning snag at night(please don't try that at home). There is always more to learn falling trees, don't let the tone of these responses keep you from taking some of their advice.

A deeper face cut will not make a tree go in a direction it is not leaning.

Thats not a bad idea boy, If your half the horse you think you are get on one of the R-5 Shot crews, they'll steer you in the right direction, plus you'll get what is possibly the best saw experience one can obtain. And with your exuberance I can see you will develop very strong arms, cause you gonnabe pumpin a lot of pushups hehehe. :umpkin:

I have been thinking about joining with the enemy, but pretty much have my schedule pre planed out for the summer. 20,000 acres of short saw-dulling sap making water taking piss smelling junipers, and i dont even have a ???? winch on the dozer. I would rather get bossed into lots of push-ups.

At the risk of getting involved in this, is anyone else wondering why this tree was left to stand half felled for three days, let alone, with a notch like that taken out of it, and it being rotten inside? Just a thought.

Jeff
