then its going through my head that I could just risk that the ring hopefully doesnt catch the cylinders little "hole"s and just fix the oil seal and the impulse line. Dam I dont know what to do. $700 sounds like an lot for that saw after doing some checking up.

$700 for a like new 084 is just fine. for a trashed out 084, it's too high.

the real question is are you going to do milling? if not don't buy it.
go for a 066, 064, 660 etc... if you are only doing firewood duties. a 460 will probably do the job!

My two cents - it sounds like you need to return the 088 and hold off on the 084 until you know more clearly what you want to do and why you want to do it.

Well I have 17 trees that are 36 to 58" at the base.(junk trees) I have to cut "cookies" out of them. My other saws and it just takes forever to cut them. I made enough money to buy a good used larger saw buy cutting them. We make cool table tops with these "cookies" like end tables and big playing tables, we dry the top and some times we put glass on them and so on, I been cutting these for about an 1 year now with my buddies 460 my old 041 boss and and my 310. I want some thing that i can put an 60" bar on and make sure I cut it in one pass, makes it easy for the wide belt sander to sand. So I was looking for an big a$$ saw to do this with. I dont know very much about the bigger saws and the cost and so sorry for asking all these ???.

I guess you do have a legitimate need for a big saw. After you cut these 17 trees will you still have a need for it? The hard thing about buying a used big saw (084/088) is that you have pretty slim pickings since there wasn't/isn't very many sold in the first place. In smaller models your able to watch a few go by to gauge the market a little better. If your local dealer is as good as what others say, that one may be your lowest risk option, especially if you need one relatively soon.

I have watched stock 084's that say run good go for (we know how that is on a ebay saw) $350-$500 all the time. Some i here dont run so well after received either.
Now getting to run the saw and trying it out from someone, in my mind is worth the extra cash of not having a dud on your hand.
I have more then that in my 084 and it was worth the extra to get to try 3 different 084's back to back and pick which one i wanted to buy after use.

C4F has got it down pretty well here. There is such a thing as a "good price" and a "good deal". So, first things first. Do you really need an 084? If you aren't milling and are just into firewood, I would find an 066/660 or a 394/395 and "live happily ever after". Weighs about a third less, and has plenty of power to do anything you are likely to come across. Don't get me wrong, an 084 is a great saw, but it's a handful, and not very practical in the real world. However, if you need one, you need one. I really don't think you need that much saw...but I could be wrong.

Now, if you are going to buy it, yes, the price is a bit high. However, vs buying something unseen on ebay, and having the dealer who sold it to you stand behind it...that's worth something to me too. An 084 or 088 is an expensive saw to fix...as you have discovered. Get some free chain on the deal and you will be okay. Personally, I'd be taking one step down in size.
But that's just me, a guy with a 3120 and an 066.

17 trees about ever 5 to 6 weeks im planing on doing..

I want to thank all you guys for the help, sorry if I am pissing you off by asking so many ?????..

if you're not milling.... I'd still go with a 660, instead of 084.

what are you going to do with the saw after those 17 trees?
no way I'd be lugging around an 084...

its going to be an long term thing.

Long term or not.. the 066 is the way to go... In comparison to the 066, my 088 doesn't see much use... but it's worth owning just for the bragging rights (Ultra doesn't ahve one, BTurner either ;);). One day I'll get to a a tree that really needs it..

I think you guys missed the key word here; 60" bar

Don't think a 066/660 is gonna take to kindly to the 60 incher. :help:

But then again neither is the 084/088

please note the difference between want and need ...

a 32in bar will take out that 58in tree. don't get me wrong... 084 with 60in bar would be the envy of most here :hmm3grin2orange:
